Default Doctors and payments on temp visa

Having now lived in Aus for 4 months we have finally registered with a doctor, we now need to go to see the doctor about our medical history - there are 5 of us!! I assume this will cost, how do we go about claiming money back or do we not pay for it in the first place? I know there is a reciprocal agreement with the UK and we do not have medicare as on 457 temp visa. Can anyone help?

Unless you have any specific illnesses that require ongoing treatment there should be no need to go and see the doctor about your medical history. Unless you get a doctor that bulk bills (pays medicare direct) you will probably have to pay anywhere between $40 and $80 for a consultation of which you will get $32 back from medicare. You should have medicare cards even if you are on a 457.

I did question whether we needed the medical/previous medical history check and she said all new patients did - none of us have any conditions. I am probably better finding another doctor and one that bulk bills.

You dont need to see the doctors about medical history. Unless you have medical conditions or you specifically want a 12month health check eg blood pressure etc.

Definitely get a Reciprocal Agreement Medicare Card - you have to pay for it anyway so why not use it.

I agree, its pretty pointless as you don't really register with a doctor and can go a different one each time if you like.
