Doctor not skilled migrants? So how?
 

First attempt at this. Go easy on me ok?

I am a doctor (non-British) registered with the GMC (UK). Will be going to Sydney next year on occupation trainee visa subclass 442. Can anyone tell me if this visa will restrict me in anyway for application of a PR in Australia? I understand that the J-1 Visa in the US has this restriction of unable to apply for PR/ other visa 5 years after the J-1 visa expires, and wonder if this is also the case for the Australia subclass 442 visa.

Another question, if doctors are not considered under skilled migrants, barring any restriction in PR application from the subclass 442, what kind of PR application can I apply for? Assuming I would have worked for 1 year in Australia as a doctor under the 442.

Hello Ben.

As you might know already, there is a surplus of doctors working in the main centres (Sydney, Melbourne), and so one of the "usual" permanent skilled visas isn't an option for you.

Rather, your best route, particularly if you were interested in working in one of the regional or low population growth areas, would be to look at a permanent visa under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme. Have a look at this webpage for more info on the RSMS:

If I get extensions to my job offer in the dept in Sydney and enjoy working there how else can I apply for the PR? Besides skilled migrant, any other option?

Spouse visa is open to all regardless of occupation :)
