I grew up in Wollongong, Thirroul was ok when I was there but has probably changed though everyone I know is advising me against moving back to the Wollongong area. There are good schools within the Illawarra and it is close to sydney for commuting. The Illawarra area is in fact very large!

Thirroul is a beach suburb in the Wollongong area with prices still pretty expensive, even compared to Sydney prices.
Nice beach and pool but a tad windy, even in Summer.

Hi all who have replied,

we seem very keen at the moment as rental wise we feel we can finally live in a house instead of an appartment!!
Have looked into preschools and spoken to one, sounded good.
Also looking to continue daughters swim lessons.
We will hopefully look to rent, Coledale, Austinmer,Thirroul area and give it at least a year! if its not for us will come back to the northern beaches.

Blossom was your living down here of happy memories!

Katie how are you finding it and would you recommend moving there.
If so hows the social life for a mother, any good playgroups etc.

Stu good luck with your move aswell.

Hi Stu

we live in Albion Park, daughter attends high school there, in a rental at the moment, the Illawarra is wonderful area, the scenery is spectacular, we went dowm to Kiama today to watch the male humpbacks arrving, wow. we go out every weekend travelling around this beautiful area, my Husband found it easy to get work, but me its hard, I am just run of the mill, and do not specialise in anything. never the less great area, plenty of space and nice housing, if you need any more info let me know,

Nadine

Hi, just catching up with past threads!

The Wollongong area and Illawarra region is lovely. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. there are lovely suburbs, beautiful beaches and the natives are friendly. Some really good schools and I understand the Govt is plowing £300m into the regeneration of the city centre.

Good roads both north and south - I have to be honest I cannot fault it, although there are suburbs where I just would not live, although my understanding is that even some of those now have improved greatly.

My daughter has just moved back to Australia, and wasn't going to go back to the Wollongong area (she grew up there) - as she had heared that it had changed so much. However, after a visit there earlier this week, she fell in love with the place again and is hastily looking for somewhere to rent, work and enrol her 2 children in schools there - so it can't be bad can it?

If you want to know anymore PM and I will assist where possible - I lived there for 14 years and still have family up at Bulli and now looks like my daughter will be living around the Figtree area.

Just a quickie... I'm blossoms daughter!

After my visit to Wollongong last week, I really liked figtree - seemed even nicer than when we were there 14 years ago... my top family places would be Figtree, cordeaux heights, farmborough heights... I liked thirroul and wonoona and all along up to stanwell park but I prefer the other areas in terms of kids getting to school, and when they are older getting themselves into wollongong to meet up with friends by public transport, plus the unanderra pools are handy. I LOVED wollongong if i could just afford about $300 per week more i would have a luxury apartment pad there!

Kiama houses you seem to get alot for you money but its a tad too far out for me... also dapto and albion park have new housing estates which offer good value for money. Dapto and unanderra themselves looked rather tired on the princes highway and could do with revamping - that was probably the most surprising to be honest... everything else was better thann expected just the PH in those areas were worse.

I am renting though so perhaps those in the market to buy may have a different view as i havent looked at buying prices to be honest!
