What's a provisional visa Is it temporary or permanent. If temporary, then yes you are likely to have to pay. If it's permanent you will only pay for Private schooling, not state.

Well the 2 year waiting period for a spouse / defacto visa is as a provisional resident. I'm not sure if children included on that application are entitled to free education as the sponsor will be an Aussie PR or citizen???

I think (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) that you don't pay for education is state schools in NSW if you come in on a defacto / interdependency visa.

I've been looking into this for days now (it affects when we emigrate) and I think I'm right. From what I can tell if you have a visa - 300, 302, 303, 309, 310 then you don't pay fees.

Not sure about other states but this is what I can figure out for NSW.

I'm a "provisional resident" and my daughter has just started school here in QLD and we are not paying full fees which we would have to on some visas, but as its a catholic school we are paying some fees.

I didn't think you'd have to pay to attend astate school no matter what visa you were on. I'd be shocked if you had to.

Yes, in some states if you come on a 457 you have to pay for your childrens' schooling.

Contrary to popular opinion there never has been, and never will be such a thing as "free" education, when you have to factor in such extra costs such as uniforms, books and materials, travel and excursions etc. Although some expenses are met both by the education system and fundraising (which parents pay for anyway), most of the extra cost has to be paid for by the parents.

We are applying on a 457 visa for NSW, and have to pay $4500 per child per year for 102 weeks (2 years).

Is that because you are only staying two years or have the rules changed and you only have to pay for the first two years?

Cheers sandra

You have to pay until you are no longer a temporary resident. You even have to pay if you are on a bridging visa whilst applying for PR because your bridging visa has the same conditions as your original visa as I understand it. You also have to pay fees in ACT on a 457 according to the policy documents.

On a temp visa in SA you do not need to pay fees for state school, one of the reasons we moved here. We pay about AUD300 a year for excursions, admin, books etc but every child pays this. The school asks for visa details and I worried unnecessarily before invoice came in.
