Default Do those air con units from the supermarket work?

I'm moving into Southport next week but the rental place we're probably taking doesn't have air con. Does anyone have any experience with those air con units for about $500 and whether they work or not?

Thanks,

Paul.

We bought a little 1HP TCL spli Air con for the spare bedroom. It only cost $195 It works like a dream. Granted we only use it when we have guests, this week it brought a double bedroom (4 by 5 metres) from 34 degrees to 22 in just under 18 minutes.

we got ours from Worldwide Appliances. I’m not sure if they are a national chain, but there are several in and around Newcastle. TCL is in the Toshiba family so it is not ask if they don’t have a big company backing them.

Can you install these yourselves or do you need 5 tradesman that you can't get hold of for weeks (to then charge you 3 times as much as the unit ) before you can get it going?

Gday

Weve fitted a few TCL air cons, they are ok.

Place in Slacks Creek sells them, thats South Brisbane.

Take a look at fairland air conditioners on www.air-conditioning.com.au

We fit aout 30 of them a week, and have done for yonks, well over a year.

They are a Hitachi clone

LOL

average install raes for most A/C units is about 350 bucks and electrics running at 150-250 bucks.

Most Fridgies carry their own sparkies, and integrate a simultaneous installation, thus reducing any time off you need.

Just a pointer, R22 is being phased out within Australia, so if you are gonna buy a good quality unit, like the LG artcool , then go for an invertor that runs on R410 gas.

NO R22 units will be available for sale within Australasia within next year or so, so servicing some lesser known chinese brands can and possibly will be a friggin nightmare, as they historically just make em and sell em.

The basis for most importers, is one container + 1-2 % spare parts. With the advent of R22 being illigal to sell, Id presume most parts will be friggin impossible to obtain, also the price of the refrigerant will no doubt triple.

Just a point.

Hope this helps steve

We are looking at getting 3 x 1 HP units for our "small" bedrooms. A spark told us they can be plugged into the mains, no big deal. Is this true?
Also, 2 of them would be in adjoining rooms so he reckons we can get one exetrnal fan unit to work for both. Again, is that right? Are they sold seperate? Would we need a 2 HP external fan unit?
Very confused with this stuff.
And what's an R22?
I have LG a/c in the other bedrooms.
No worries if you don't give free advice to expats!

Ste has been an air con and fridge bod for 10 years and his advice is get an inverter if poss - cheaper to run and go for the best you can afford. Don't undersize for your room needs just for cheapness - pointless, it will run and run and you'll get output worth sod all.

Some air con bods here ( all should officially) have restricted elec licence and so install can/should be done by one man. Ask around, you might bump into someone willing to do a cash job for you, rather than pay a firm.

LG, Mitsubishi, etc are all much of a muchness, all run and all also have their probs, nothings perfect. If you feel like going mad, get the Daikins - quiet as and economical. Worth the extra $$$ in the long run.

Good luck.

Yes, units can be plugged into the mains, just 'looks' messier ( and your 'spark' sounds like he doesn't fancy crawly through your roof void),

Yes, you can run simultanious units into one external unit but it needs to be the correct size. Will ask Ste about the sizing needs for two 1HP's,

R22 is a gas / refridgerant currently being phased out. Green house emissions and all that malarkey.

Are you building or already moved in? Always easier to stick it (piping etc)between the walls whilst building otherwise someone'll have to crawl through your roof void!! (no drama though). Depends upon the situation of your room to be air conned, outside wall - straight through, internal wall - either plug in or pass through ceiling.

Thanks for that.
House already established but vaulted ceilings so no loft space. He did say he would chase the wires in.
But - do I need a spark to do that? I mean, if I wanted to just thread the lead behind the plasterboard and plug in near the socket, can I? Then all I need is a Fridgie.

Mate, Tana Merah is within gobbing distance of our place on Kingston road lol..

Always give free advice mate.

The electricity debate falls in 2 confusing dilemmas.

1 sparky will sa no every unit has to be hardwired into a isolator switch and a separate breaker in the fusebox.

another spark will say nope its got a plug on tut end so plug it in.

Sheesh, well we are of the former opinion, get it done properley.

Get an isolator switch installed outside, where the ductowrk runs down the wall, to the compressor unit.

Our spark, based in Slacks Creek, charges about 150 a time for this installation, and includes all wiring, a clipsal isolator switch, and a separatae, trip in the fuse box.

The person you spoke to is talking about multi head split system, I wouldnt opt for this, albeit can be slightly cheaper, it also means, if you have a problem, then 2 rooms are decommissioned.

Just fit a 1 hp to each room, that you want.. general rule of thumb is 1hp = 16 sqm of cooling.

Yes if you have 2 off 1hp head units ( internal ) then you would need a min 2hp outdoor unit.

These can be exceptionally expensive using R410 gassed systems.

They are becoming more popular, for what reason i cannot think, albeit they can save you some money initially.

We would never recommend whhilst building a home to encase or install pipework within the cavity of the home, unless it is jointless. Furthermore in doing so, the pipes would emerge from a fixed position externally, which could cause problems with servicing, and or upgrades in the future.... ie bigger aircons , bigger pipes, etc etc Plus i wouldnt fancy gas escaping within the walls of my home.

2 pieces of advice for where you live, as it is subject to flooding... perhaps install the outdoor unit on a bracket.

If you need any help contact me off my website, or have a look thru our gallery online, or pm me.

Totally agree.

We opt for getting a separate licensed sparky to do the electricals, cos its quicker lol.

Our preffered choices would be:

Mitsubishi
LG
Panasonic
Fujitsu

All sweet top quality units, good guys have LG Artcools 2/2.5hp for 1500 bucks at the mo !!! sweet
