Or do employers want you in the country first to save the hassle?

Re: Do many people actually get a job before they go?
Potential employers we approached to enquire with were not interested until we have PR.
Another side that some one posted a bit ago was that taking the approach of I'm just arrived in Oz, some employers may (wrongly) read into this that do they need a visa? (=hassle & money), they are not settled (will they stay, take time to sort themselves out). IMHO being there gives a better impression, thus more chance of a job
Whilst some have got jobs before they go, but this depends what type of job is being sought after.

Exactly what I thought. Was going to send hubbies cv off to a few companies but didn't know if I would be wasting my time.

If you don't get a nibble perhaps you are wasting your time, full stop.

We wont be looking for jobs until we arrive but have been tentatively making contacts from this end to suss out the situation. Both of us were provided with contacts through work colleagues here so I suppose we've been lucky. The gamble is how much of your capital are you prepared to use on daily living expenses until something turns up?

partly due to this uncertainty, we have delayed actually emigrating until next year, and will be making use of the 1yr before validating. Nearer to going we will again approach (but with PR status) these certain companies as well as raising the possibility (but unlikely) transfer within the company Mr W is working for.

My husband had a confirmed job offer before we left, but i think its much easier for nurses to do that

Any nurses who arent going with a job sorted out, the RCN have a list of nurses in various specialties who have volunteered to be contacted by newbies to help with looking for work, contacts, interviews etc.

It is possible to get a job before you go as my hubby did.
He looked up all the industries that did what he specialised in and sent of his cv electronically.
he recieved an e.mail back within a few hours offering him a job.
so it can happen.
i suppose it did help him being married to an aussie citizen(me)as they did ask what his migrancy position wasbut do keep trying as if they think you are what they want you could have the same luck,go on,give it a go,what have you got to lose?

I've been applying online for a while but all i got was more of rejection mails. I guess being there certainly have an added advantage especially in IT where the competition is so strong. They would prefer to contact someone who's easily available there rather than having to arrange or make long distance phone interview which will cost a lot. My ex-colleague who's there apply the same position online as I did... and she got a call immediately while i'm hearing nothing from them. Being there would at least get you some interviews .

At the moment the only way through the crowd of IT applicants is to pick up the phone or go and meet the people. The IT jobs are about in Sydney but you have to fight for them.
I am afraid the local applicant has the advantage on face to face contact.

If he hadnt been able to get the position with the same company, he would have just had to get here some other way, it just made it easier for us

Ditto for Dagboy, he applied for a position in Oz with the same company that he worked for in the UK under a employer sponsored 457 visa. It did NOT guarantee him a job (ie it wasnt a transfer, he is now employed by the Oz company branch completely seperately to what he was employed in the UK), but it did make it easier ie knowing he was doing exactly the same job, being assessed as suitable etc. He did a telephone interview & they then offered him the job. Nothing from the UK was transferrable ie pension/holidays etc, he actually finished work with UK office & technically left their employ & then joined the Oz company. If he hadnt been suitable they could very easily said no. On the other hand, what was the likelihood of them not wanting to employ Employee of the Year?
