You'll be telling me that FORD does not stand for Fix Or Repair Daily any more?

Hi folks visiting frae the canada forum.
Aye Margaret3 the Scots accent can be a hard one for folks to understand .
I came to rural canada in my late 40s and as a country boy wae a strong accent i have had a few problems wi folk not understanding what im saying and working for a french canadian firm in the boonies can be interesting.
I found that speaking slower and asking folk to do the same
but if someone had told me to speak proper when getting a can o coke they would have been told to stick it sideways
I also found that when i swear everyone can understand every word..lol.
chin up girl be the best you can and remember there are two types o folk ....those who are Scottish and those who want to scottish.

You'll know your accent is fully assimilated when you can manage it successfully lol!
My other main problem is at the deli counter... I've had to stop saying 'could I have a kilo of bacon, please' and say 'A kilo of bacon, please' because they ALWAYS think I've asked for half a kilo.

Found On Road Dead. FORD is the acronym my paramedic son uses for car crash victims who've been ejected from the vehicle.

Re: do i need to change my accent to get a job in australia
I'm struggling to find work at the moment- and foolishly I put it down to:
1) Christmas approaching
2) Almost everyone seems to bog off til end of Jan
3) No one wants the hassle of contractors at this time of the year.
Perhaps my very ordinary 'south England with Aussie words' accent is to blame?
OP- it is a rubbish time of the year to be looking for work.

To the Op....if your accent is really strong then it might be a problem.

I've been asked to speak slowly and clearly in Singapore because they can't understand my accent. Last one was before a presentation in front of a 150 people. Was I offended - not in the slightest and it hasn't stopped me from working there. If the poster believes what they wrote then change and suit your audience because your audience will not change to suit you.
