That's because they use tablets with salt already there.

But to answer your question look in bunnings for "water softener salt" same thing.

Nobody uses dishwasher salt here. It's not necessary - I've had a dishwasher for 25 years and no salt has ever gone near it.

Why do you think you need it?

Most supermarkets sell "3 in 1" or "5 in 1" tablets that have the rinse and water softener regenerating chemicals in them, so no need for salt.

My dishwasher would not run without salt so I had to figure out a way.

Beware water softener salt is sold in 25kg bags

You can use it in your pool though.

The flashing red SALT light on the dishwasher has something to do with it

What do people do when the OIL or PETROL lights comes on in their car? Assume it's not necessary?

My parents had a similar issue with a new dishwasher - was something to do with the settings on the dishwasher. Looked it up in the user manual and there was a "fix' for it (involving a complex sequence of button pressing lasting about 30 seconds) - no more flashing light.

Almost same problem here but my dishwasher will not start if the salt container is empty.

You can use pool salt. A 25kg bag from Bunnings costs about $5.

When we bought our new dishwasher I looked for salt as the flashing light was on, but I buy the 5 in 1 tablets. By chance having a coffee in McDonalds one day I was sat next to a Miele guy (our dishwasher is Miele) and asked him about it, he said that in our area we wouldn't need salt anyway, but if we had needed it, as I am using the 5 in 1 tablets just to ignore the light.

A detachment of five elfen water spirits emerge from the drain plug, take mystical hacksaws to the tablet, stow them in waterproof bags, take up a high command point and unleash the right portion at the right time, before disappearing down the drain, where they pass the time by fashioning small huts from bits of spaghetti and carrot.
