Does anyone know if DIMA routinely follow up work expereience references with a phone call etc ? or do they usually just rely on the written statement provided witht he application ?

They have the right to do pretty much whatever they like if they have
any doubts at all about the veracity of your references.
And if they discover they've been misled, the consequences can include
being barred completely from Australia.

Jeremy,
Agree entirely with your statement and the consequences.
However, I have a little different concern.
My employer, like others in IT industry in US, is going out of
business and no one will respond as the corporation will cease to
exist. Thus if DIMIA verifies my last employment until November 2002,
I am going to be fine but after that there will be no answer.
What do you do in that situation?
Any guidance or help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If possible, get them to state that they are going out of business etc, on official letterhead. If you're really eager, make a statutory declaration to state that the company is going chapter 11, and send these documents to DIMIA.

Don't forget to get a detailed job description from a work colleague
if you can, preferably someone who doesn't mind being contacted by
DIMIA. Even if the company no longer exists, you will then still have
a way of verifying your details.

I have heard of people getting a letter from individuals in the
company, not the official HR dept (but also get one form HR). They
seem to accept these. I sent in one form HR, one from my manager, and
one from someone I worked with.
Most of these you can get regardless of the state of the company -
what you need to do now is get a pile of letterheads from a friendly
secretary, so you can generate letters and get them signed after the
place closes.
In terms of them phoning the "non-official
person such as a manager, the people who interviewed me (job not
DIMIA) asked me for the references to find someone in another
department who worked next to me not over me.
