Default DIMA checks ??

I am thinking of applying for the skilled sponsored residency visa for Australia and I have all the requirements other than the basic requirement of having worked for 12 of the last 18 months in my skilled occupation.

This is becuse I have spent the last year on holiday in Australia. I have been told that DIMA dont actually check where you have been residing and that if I got a suitable reference from the UK stating I have been working there for the last 12 months then it should get through.

Any views/ thoughts/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't try it! For a start, DIMIA have electronic records of all your visits to Australia... they would be able to see quite quickly and easily that you had been in Australia during that time period!
