Have diesel prices in Oz sky-rocketed in the same way that they have in the UK recently?

Is diesel considered the best type of engine in Oz from an economy perspective?

They have risen around 60% since we arrived in 2005. Make no mistake, living in Aus is no longer cheaper than the UK -but much sunnier

Diesel in my area is up at around $1.80 p/l. When I arrived 3 years ago I think it was around $1.10. Petrol when I arrived was 98c p/l and is now $1.55. Worldwide phenomenon I am afraid.

$1.72 Diesel in Brisbane. The QLD Government throws a subsidy our way.

$1.52 for unleaded today.

Expected diesel will top $2 by Christmas if not sooner.

Is it a cheaper type of fuel ? Basically no, its more expensive. Of course the savings are usually in the fuel economy and service. That and many places in outback Queensland you simply cant buy petrol but they will have diesel.

Nearly correct: we taxpayers in NSW subsidise QLD petrol by the GST transfer system.

I dont think GST comes into it. Qld was the only state which wasn't in contravention of a high court ruling that certain fuel taxes were unconstitutional. The federal government agreed to collect these fees on behalf of the states, but agreed to hand the taxes back to Qld. So in effect, nothing has changed, petrol was always cheaper in Qld, tax back or not.

I seem to remember Diesel being cheaper in the UK, was that down to tax?

BlueMotion promises to improve that efficiency even more. 3.9L/100km from a 1.4 Polo?

Anyone know if the BlueMotion models are available in Oz?

I might be thick here but I really don't see that. Nothing suggests that any funding comes from anywhere else other than QLD state itself which is a return of commonwealth government tax which the state would otherwise receive.

Maybe someone can set the record straight, I'd love to know as a matter of general knowledge.

So does it vary state by state the amount of rebate you get? If you were say a haulage company how much do you get back?

Only QLD does it I think. Its simply adjusted at the pump and the advertised price is 8.whatever cents less per liter than in NSW for example. Basically as a driver you do nothing except fill up and pay.

There are proposals later this year to scrap that system though to stop QLD state funding people who are not resident. The idea is to produce your QLD driving license when you pay to receive the rebate. This stops truckies from NSW filling up cross border and the fuel companies benefiting from it from not passing on the full amount.
