Re: Did anyone use Westpac for a mortgage?
Yeah we took out a mortgage offset account with them. Not the cheapest (about average) but we only had a 10% dpeosit (not the 20% deposit required to avoid mortgage insurance premium) Somehow with their mortgage offer we have avoided paying this extra premium unlike with other banks etc!
We've recently arrived in Melbourne and wanting to buy an investment property. Just wondered what people's experiences were of Westpac and mortgage applications. We opened our accounts with them whilst still overseas and still have our money with them.
I started working a week ago (full time, permanent job) but hubby is still looking as he came after me and arrived some 2 weeks ago. Do I need to have been working a certain length of time before we can be considered etc.
Thanks

I thought you had to be in Australia for 6 months to qualify for a first home buyers grant??? Is that true or not??
Hello
I'm sat here in our house which we purchased using a small Westpac mortgage. We secured the mortgage 14 days after arriving in Australia and neither of us had jobs! Westpac was great up until the day before we completed when they told me that they had not processed the first home buyers grant so we had to transfer that part of the settlement in to our mortgage account - BUT - they then called back to say oh yes, we have the money and so all was well in the end!
Good luck with your purchase!

You have to live in your first home for six months otherwise you are supposed to pay it back. That is the only '6 month' rule as far as the FHOG is concerned.
Cheers,
Mark.
