Diabetes in Australia
Hi all,
I've read a few threads about diabetes in Australia and having to pay for medicine and it ain't free etc. but was wondering if there are any Type 2 out there who could give me the low down on the level of care available and what costs are involved, where to go for blood test and hba1c tests and ongoing care etc.
how much does metformin(500mg) cost out there as well please?
What are the implications with medical insurance etc - does it cost more because of having diabetes etc.
Also, Does anyone know if you have to pay for thyroid prescriptions. My wife had the radiation treatment a while ago and again over here she gets free prescription for it. Again, what is the level of care available and how much do prescriptions cost please?
Regards

You will have to pay for any prescription medications, however if you have Medicare your treatment is covered if you go to a bulk-billing doctor. Blood tests are covered as is a specialist if you ask your GP to refer you to a public clinic. Metformin is inexpensive here (sorry, don't have a price because every pharmacy is different) as is thyroxine.

The National Diabetes website will provide you a little more information on this subject and also has the prices of the NDSS consumables:
