Default Destitute: asylum seekers pushed on to the street by an official letter

After reading countless bull about refugees in the UK , I have noticed a few loop holes in the Klan dreamers statements and this is one of them that the asylum seekers are looked after .
Even at the biggest quoted figure of refugees coming to the UK it only just matches what Australia takes evey year in immigration , given the UKs economy is about 3 times the size of Australia I do wonder who has the real problem trying to intergrate the newcomers.

Destitute: asylum seekers pushed on to the street by an official letter

The Refugee Council and similar organisations are unable to house asylum seekers who have been denied support. They feed them what they can but have to lock them out at night. Homeless shelters cannot provide beds without housing benefit. Asylum seekers cannot work and have no means of finding money to pay for beds. Refugee groups lose track of them as they disappear into cities.

"Our hands are tied," said Margaret Lawly, acting chief executive of the Refugee Council. Ben Jackson, Shelter's director of external affairs, said: "This is a complete contradiction of the government's attempt to tackle homelessness."

Two weeks ago the high court heard the story of an Ethiopian, a Somali and a Malaysian left malnourished and destitute on the streets.

Judges ruled that the implementation of the government's policy - section 55 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act - amounted to inhumane and degrading treatment in breach of the European human rights convention. The Home Office is appealing against the judgment and a hearing is expected at the end of the month.

Until this year, all destitute asylum seekers could apply to the national asylum support service for shelter and food while their claims to stay in the UK were processed.

Now the government denies food, shelter and money to destitute asylum seekers if it decides they did not apply for asy lum "as soon as reasonably practicable" after arriving in the UK. There is no right of appeal.

The Home Office says: "The change in the law is designed to address the real abuse of the system by people who are in the UK for weeks or years, such as students or visitors, who then claim asylum as a way of staying in the UK at the taxpayers' expense."

If you cannot see the difference between screened immigrants and destitute refugees, then your mental facalities must be severely imparied.

The number of asylum seekers decreased from 2000, from 1,092,000 to 923,000. The countries with the highest asylum applications were UK (88,300), Germany (88,290), United States (86,180) and France (47,290).

These are just the figures for the ones that apply, how many don't and just hop on a ferry or train and bypass the system. Not so easy doing that in Australia, but then you know that don't you, but don't want to admit it.

You read the story who wants to live on the streets and as far the fine line between an immo and refugee goes who cares .
The fact is no refugee who goes the UK now will get a handout unless hes pucker.

Australia 'flexible' on refugee numbers 31/03/2003 22:25:11

The Australian Government says it is prepared to look at increasing refugee numbers if the war in Iraq displaces large numbers of people.

Australia's Immigration Minister, Philip Ruddock said 110,000 migrants will be accepted during the next finacial year, including just over 12,000 refugees, the same level as the previous year.

But Mr Ruddock said the government is monitoring the situation in the Middle East.

"We are not ruling out a need to assist in relation to refugees if situations emerge where that is necessary,' he said.

"It is important to recognise in relation to refugee and humanitarian programs that they remain flexible."

According to Home Office statistics, 72,430 people claimed asylum in the UK last year, but only about 20,000 were granted it.

However, the Home Office estimates that 1,000 illegal immigrants are trying to access the UK through the Channel Tunnel each week
Full Story

Even the Home office reckon their are 52,000 trying just to get through the tunnel, how many do you think try the ferries, planes and anything else they can think of.

Also what happens to these rejected refugees in the UK, I'm sure they don't hang around to be deported, they just vanish into the cities. How many of these 52,430 failed asylum seeker were deported very few i suspect.

In Australia they are locked up as soon as they are caught, and untill they are deported they stay locked up.

You dream on.

AUSTRALIA’S ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
WHO ARE THEY?
Did you know there were more people from the United Kingdom and USA illegally in Australia from overstayed visas as at 31 December 1998 than the total number of boat people who have arrived here in the past 10 years?
In 1998-99, 3 007 556 million visas were issued to visitors, 67 130 to students, and 109 290 to temporary residents. As at 31 December 1998, there were an estimated 50 600 people who had overstayed their visas.
Since 1996 an increasing number of people have arrived illegally at Australia’s airports. In 1998-99, 2106 people were refused entry at Australia’s airports. In the same period, 926 people arrived without authority on boats. Of the 2106 unauthorised people arriving by air, the majority were from Iraq (325), South Korea (159) and People’s Republic of China (112).
People who arrive in Australia without authority are detained in one of six immigration detention facilities maintained by Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs:
· Villawood Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) in Sydney, established in 1976 with a capacity for about 275 people;
· Maribyrnong IDC in Melbourne, established in 1966 with a capacity for about 80 people;
· Perth IDC, established in 1981 with a capacity for about 40 people;
· the Immigration Reception and Processing Centre (IRPC) in Port Hedland, Western Australia, established in 1991 with a capacity for about 800 people

It is estimated that there are up to 1000 illegal immigrants per day (not week as you said paul) entering the UK.

People trafficker jailed for eight years

Belgian judge hits out at UK immigration law for drawing illegal aliens

Andrew Osborn in Brussels
Wednesday August 13, 2003
The Guardian

An Albanian gangster was yesterday sentenced to eight years in prison for smuggling an estimated 12,000 illegal immigrants into Britain from Belgium, in one of the largest human trafficking operations ever dismantled.
The Belgian judge in the case described the "businessman" - Mhill Sokoli, 35, - as "the spider in the web" of a 23-member Belgium-based gang that smuggled up to 12,000 people into Britain between 2001 and February of this year.

The scale of the operation has shocked experts: Sokoli's human cargo was equivalent to the population of a small English town such as Selby in North Yorkshire or Sudbury in Suffolk.

Freddy Troch, the presiding judge in the case, said the Albanian had "exploited the dreams of illegal immigrants to live in what was for them a land paved with gold". Sokoli allegedly told them that Britain was "the promised land" and that it was easy to find well-paid work in London.

"They were ruthless human traffickers," Judge Troch said.

"Their only goal was to make as much money as possible on the back of these poor souls. The inhuman and beastly manner in which their clients were treated and hidden in trucks was of no concern to them."

Sokoli's work was lucrative in the extreme. Immigrants were charged up to £2,100 for guaranteed safe passage across the Channel, when the lorry driver had been bribed, or less for a trip with no guarantees. They had already had to pay £2,700 to get to Belgium from Albania.

Prosecutors allege that Sokoli, who was fined £85,000 on top of his jail sentence, amassed a personal fortune of up to £12m in the process, while the gang itself is estimated to have cleared about £35m.

Sokoli cleverly concealed his wealth, however, by living in a small flat in Brussels and by quietly investing the money in property in his native northern Albania.

The vast majority of the immigrants were Albanian although the gang, whose members yesterday received prison sentences of between three and seven years as well as fines, also helped other east Europeans and Africans get into Britain, some of whom were recruited in refugee camps.

Court officials said it had been a structured operation. Immigrants were ferried by speedboat from Albania to Italy and then dispatched to a series of safe houses in Belgium by train or by road. They were then concealed in lorries, with or without the driver's consent, and smuggled into Britain via the Belgian port of Zeebrugge at a rate of up to 20 a day.

Officials said the case was unprecedented.

"This is one of the most severe cases we have ever had," Hilde Pauwels, a court spokeswoman, told the Guardian.

"We had seen that they were smuggling people into the UK all day. It was always people looking for a better life...who were willing to pay for it."

She added that Sokoli and his gang had reacted with indifference when they were sentenced.

"The reaction was very strange. They didn't seem to care very much and that has left a bitter taste in our mouths."

Sokoli's lawyers did not deny his activities and argued that he was an honest entrepreneur trying to run a business. Nor, they claimed, was he exploiting people.

His arrest - at gunpoint - was the result of an elaborate month-long surveillance operation during which his mobile phone was tapped.

He was eventually ambushed by the police in February and caught driving a van of 10 illegal immigrants to a pick-up point near Brussels.

Sokoli's mostly Albanian gang members each had a specific task. Some were drivers, others ran safe houses while others met new arrivals.

He and his associates now have 15 days to decide whether they will appeal.

Controversially, Judge Troch lashed out at Britain yesterday for "its poor [immigration] laws that attract illegal aliens and offer them no protection".

"It is surprising that Britain does not deal with the causes of the trade in human beings while immense efforts are being made here," he said.

Never happen in Australia?

Illegal immigrants Working Next Door to PM
By HT Lee

Building workers have uncovered shonky immigration scams involving the employment and exploitation of illegal immigrants in the industry.

The union marched on the Prime Minister's Sydney offices today claiming illegal immigrants were working on a building site next doot to the government offices.

The Federal Department of Immigration is investigating this scam -- illegal workers being flown into Australia on commercial flights. The Federal Police is also looking into the whole matter.

Two subcontractors at the Piano Building site in Phillip Street right next door to Prime Minister John Howard's Sydney Ministrial office were invoved in the scam. The workers were being paid less than 50 per cent of union rates. Payroll tax and workers compensation premiums were also not paid.

The Howard Government claimed in Parliament yesterday the CFMEU was exaggerating the extent of the problem of illegal labour in the Sydney construction industry.

Never lost what are you illegal?

Every year Australia is home to about 60,000 illegal immigrants. They enter the country and cross borders, avoiding authorities and ignoring laws, with most coming from the United Kingdom and Asia.

Roughly 30,000 illegal immigrants work here, often until the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) catches up with them.

In just one month DIMIA teams around the country picked up more than 700 illegal immigrants working in factories, restaurants and brothels and our cameras were there to witness the covert raids that take place around the clock.

As well as working here, many illegal workers do not pay tax and some even double dip, working and drawing on social security.

The drain on taxpayers is in the millions; to find and process just one illegal worker costs about $50,000.

You've still not told us how these theoretical refugees get into the country with it's tightened border security.

Or is the border controls a figment of the gov immagination according to you.

Forget the fact there is no available housing for your bull numbers in the UK , over 100,00 legal refugees enter Australia every year plus 60,000 illegal ones.
