How come, of all the people i know that have emigrated to aus, no-one has returned, except for holidays ?

How come, anyone i speak to that has been to aus always say " you'll love it " or "gorgeous" or " " wish i was going back " etc.

I'm not trying to say it's great.I have no doubts they have problems too.I'm just wondering why i have NEVER come across anyone that has left aus voluntarily to live in the uk.

If I remember rightly the programme in Spain Queenie referred to, the house was built to hold animals and didn't even have any foundations. The cameras were rolling as the couple were told this and you could immediately sense the shock.
Yes, I saw that one. The couples teenage son suggested that they survey the house but the parents didn't take any notice of him or the bloody great big crack running down the side of the house/animal shed.....

At first glance I thought OMG what the hell do people take the plunge for without considering the financial aspects etc etc. Then I noticed that there is no breakdown of the 41% by country (they could all have been headed for Siberia for all we know). Then I noticed the survey sample is only 2,000 people. Well how many emigrate to Oz each year from the UK. It must be in 5 or 6 figures. What to do you think?
All surveys are interesting in their own way. They provide lively debate at the pub on Friday nights!!!
We can't make life changing decisions based on the experience of others in a survey of 2000 people whether favourable or not.
We might take note of surveys and store the info away for future use.
We're all individuals and we will either settle in Aus or not. If 90% of all migrants returned home from Aus I suspect we would all be extremely worried. However you may be in the 10% that stays.....who knows.......well hopefully we will find out soon

Sorry.....got a bit serious there for a moment
:) :)

I haven't seen that one either. That's great - it must mean there's another series out there somewhere!

They did one on Oz too (Redcliffe). The wife was a superwoman and stepped in to help save the day. The marlin fishing boat one. If you are reading wifey, you were fab and hope it's all still going well!

Queenie
She posted on here a couple of times after it was aired in the UK last year - do a search I'm sure you'll find it. She was defending her husband for not being totally useless while she saved their skins! :D :D

Apparently they are still doing well (or were a few months ago!)

BP, are these figures definitely playing by the same rules? What I mean is that the DIMIA figures show visa grants and we're all aware that 1 visa could grant several people residency (spouse & kids / dependants). Does the 2nd figure also work on 'visa holders departing' or is it individuals? Could make a big difference to the gist of the results.
I'm with Paul (&Ann-Marie) on this one, I know a few people who have left for Oz and never returned. In fact I don't know of anyone who has returned, save for those who log on to this forum.
I also think that there are many, many people who go unprepared and lay more stress on themselves thatn they need (with starting business in a field they don't know, etc) and probably these people will be the majority in those quoted figures. Some of the people on those TV shows are just laughable. I sit watching them gobsmacked that they can be so naive / stupid* (*delete as appropriate) to think that things will just fall into place. I just want to scream  WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

Looking at figures will always be inaccurate, and they will be higher figures than that for those who returned to the UK. They won't include Brit's with Aus Citizenship who just go back to Britain without declaring it.

I certainly will not be declaring anything on the flight card when I leave here .. I have Aus Citizenship.. so I will not be included in any figures when I leave , same as countless others who have left.

We didn't declare our intentions to leave permanently either - and we have no intention of returning to Oz.

I always think a good analogy is those people who start a new business. The stat (similar in UK and Oz) is that 80% fail within 3 years - but that never stops people from trying, because they all believe that they will be the 20% that make it. The stats are more favourable for settling in Oz, but the overoptimistic outlook may be similar.

You have NEVER come accross anyone that has left OZ voluntarily to live in the UK because...

a). Some people you've spoken to are lying
b). You have a small social circle

Take you pick.
;)

I've only known one migrant couple return to the UK (but they soon came back again!). I've been here for 25 years (nearly) and have met hundreds of people from the UK in that time. Maybe it's an age thing - if they get to my age, then they're pretty well settled.

I do know a few Australians who have left for the UK - but they've all come back too!

I know a few people who migrated to Australia then returned including my own sister.
My son is an Australian citizen and has not returned.
Why do people feel so threatened by this type of thread?

Go Banana's !! Jul 26th 2004 12:47 am

One of the kick starts for the Banana's coming to Oz was seeing all the people on these 'No Going back' programmes having a go with all the odds stacked against them and looking pretty naive and ill prepared - but still sticking it out.
We thought if they can do it then we can, with all the research we did, 26 members of family, a realistic outlook, an open mind and a modest wegde of cash.

Think on peeps, all the ones in the prog. stayed even when it was awful, we had some update progs before we left the UK and all were nearly on their feet or getting there. The one that sticks in my mind the most is the poor family who after decorating the two new guest sweets, were subjected to a thunderstorm and the overhead patio leaked down into the guest area that the wife had finished the day before!! I soooo felt for her found myself talking to the telly.

Anyway, so far so good for us.

Jill

PS Nice to see you back Grayling, hopefully won't need your services just yet;)
