Default deposits for rental accommodation !!

Hi all, does anyone have any info on how much deposit is normal to put down on a short term/hol rental accommodation. We have found a site, but they are asking for 50% up front which we have to give over the phone. Also a $1000 bond - Im not sure if this is when we arrive though - is this normal for a holiday rental ?
Can anyone help

Not too sure, I don't think it's standard we rented a cabin in Melbourne and didn't have to pay anything until 3 days after we arrived.

Hi, we run short term accommodation in Rockingham Perth, it depends how long it is till you arrive, we ask for around one weeks rent if it is after four weeks away, if it is within the 4 weeks we ask for more. We do not require a bond. I thought that was only for a leased property, not a holiday home. That is usually covered with the all inclusive fee. I hope this is of some help..Suzette and Will..Our web page is attached so you get an idea of what should be included in a short term holiday rental. http:/members .westnet.com.au/cedarcottage/

The great thing about renting in Australia is that you don't have to pay council tax or water rates; these are all paid by your landlord.

Hi Sephy, we ask for 50% deposit (we've been burnt once already when we only asked for a week) & balance within 3 working days of arrival but no bond. Another company I know asks for the balance on hand over of the keys. It's also quite common for you to have to give a credit card number & in the terms & conditions somewhere it often says in small print that you authorise them to charge your credit card for any extra charges that you may incur, including damages (we dont do that, but I know a few who do).

I guess at the end of the day, there are plenty of honest people out there, but there are also people who aren't, which is why people try to safeguard themselves.

Just to add to the above. We generally take credit card payments for the deposit via PayPal - that way we do not need to have a merchant account with the bank and we do not need to safeguard people's credit card details - we never see them - that is all with PayPal.

Cheers,

DagBoy

We rent from Raine and Horne and we have to pay excess water rates, the landlord does contribute as we have sprinklers that run off the mains, there are 2 of us and for 3 months excess water it was $85.

That's a common requirement, since many Australia suburbs have water restrictions during the summer.

But hey, at least it's not council tax and water rates!

We generally ask for 25% deposit in our accomodation, or 50% deposit for the Package.
