Dentist - UK or OZ?
I wonder if anyone has experience of dentists in OZ.
I am unsure as to whether get a check up here (UK) before leaving or having it done once there.
Are they expensive, is there the equivalent of NHS treatment as in UK?
Thanks

I'd say get it done before coming out, it can get expensive out here. For all the faults that the NHS has I think its much better than here.

A clean cost $70
Two fillings costs $110 ($55 each)
An extraction cost $100 for a childs tooth.
A freee dental service, in teaching hospitals, is available, but only to Health Care Card holders, I think. Waiting time is not short.

Bloodyhell...............those costs are high.
People are too quick to moan about the NHS in the Uk, but I cant fault them with dental services................both my sons have had `train tracks`, hasnt cost me anything here, would have been looking a thousands of aussie dollars

If it's not medically required, why should taxpayers fund it ?
Same argument as why we don't get free surgery for kids for anything cosmetic unless it causes severe stress or will affect development.
I'll point anyone that disagrees with this to a multitude of internet info that says this is coming.
I fully expect to have to pay for straightening my kids teeth if they are a bit crooked.

Those prices don't sound too extortionate! I recently went to the dentist and got charged £18 for check up and £45 for filling - and that was an NHS dentist! Lots of people round here can't get onto the books of NHS dentists as there are so few dentists that do NHS work. I suppose you generally earn less in Oz, but doesn't sound too bad in comparison....

I agree with the above posts, unless you belong to a health fund. I belong to HCF in Oz - they have their own dental centres. The quality of work is good/very good.
Costs? From what I recall, inspections, normal fillings, cleaning are free. White fillings ("oh, vanity, what is thy name") are ~$50. Overall, I've found them to be very good. And for more advance work (eg root canal), you save $$$ compared with a private dentist.
P.S. As an amusing (?) aside, my dentist in the UK used to complain about Aussie dentists, claiming that they were unscrupulous and created work.
"They just loved to drill, creating big holes. We used to call it the Aussie Trench".
But it's not my experience!

Drilling used to be the way to ensure people still had teeth...
However over the last 20+ years that has altered, especially with flouride toothpastes.
It is better to have "aussie trench" than a gummie smile?

But after my bad experience of dentists in NZ I'm only to glad to pay and ensure they dont create more problems than they try and fix.
DEF get all work done in UK BEFORE comming here esp if you've a good dentist.

I'm still in UK and just had a check up £38 and he said that 2 of my crowns will need to come off soon and will cost about £800. Bargain.
