Default Dental Hygienist

Does anybody know what the equivalent of a dental hygienist is called over here?
I used to get my check-up from the dentist, and then a separate appointment with the hygienist for a thorough clean and polish in the UK.

Over here the dentist only seems to do the check-up. I did ask for a clean but I only got a very rudimentary bit of scraping and no polishing or anything.
Cant find hygienists in the yellow pages...
Im in melbourne (eastern burbs) if anybody can recommend a good one

They are called "dental hygienist" . You can't find them in the phone book, because they don't practice on their own but as part of a dental surgery.

At my dental surgery there are two dentists and two hygienists.

But not all dental surgeries have a dental hygienist.

I don't live in Melbourne so can't recommend a Melbourne dentist. But someone else might be able to. And you could ask around at work. Then, when you phone up for an appointment, ask if they have a hygienist before you go.
