the definition of "a minor in IT"?
 

It is really nice to find this forum! Perhaps the answer I need is here:)
I stayed at the ACS webside for three hours this afternoon and I can't find any answers about the definition of "a minor in IT" from there.
I have been working as a software engineer for 6 years(long enough?),but I only hold a bachelor degree of management science,and there are about 40 sujects in the transcript,only 6 of them are in the area of IT.
Now is it possible for me to apply for the group B? or RPL ?
I was told by an migration agent that the minimium percentage of
IT sujects need to reach 20% to meet the requairment of "a minor in IT",and the it is too high for me.Does that mean migrating to OZ is only a dream for me?:(
Any advice will be greatly appriciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to our NG!! I don't know anything about IT I'm afraid, but I know we have loads of IT'ers who can probably answer for you:) But there are a number of routes including company sponsorship and state nominated categories that might apply to you..

One migration agent told me that a minor in IT is defined as having between 15% and
29% IT-related course content. So I don't know what is the lower limit: 15% or 20%.
From what I know, it's not uncommon for students in U.S. to gain a computer science
minor after having taken only 5-7 courses in IT, but I don't know what is the ACS
definition.

But if you don't qualify as a minor, you can always do the RPL.

Hey dragon...
1) I believe with a 6 years work exp it would be advisable for you to apply through RPL...i say this based on the research that i have been doing for the past couple of weeks...6 subject out of 40 and not an IT specific course ...I don't think that would amount to much as compared to Australian norms for minor...
i too am sailing in the same ship since I have completed my Masters in Business adminstration (specialisation IT) with some 7 of 40 subjects in IT and have an Australian sponsor but have only one years work exp...so assessment is a problem.

I believe ACS looks for certain specific areas in which u must have studied some subjects which your course should have covered ...like SDLC,DB etc.

2)a curiousity: Sophia had suggested company sponsorship....is it possible to skip qualification assessment if a copany is sponsoring you??
