Forget cheap - it's a heck of a lot safer!

All of your assets get re-valued to their value on the date you move to australia - so in short - no there is no tax.

If you carry 10k in Cash you are a) nuts and b) nuts and c) nuts.

You should use a money transfer company like Hifx or Tranzfers both are reputable and hundreds of people have used them from this site.

Are there international banks such as HSBC in SL? Not sure but if so, you could open an account with them in SL and then one here and transfer that way. Might not be cheaper than from another bank but may be easier and quicker... Just a suggestion.

Definitely use a bank - do not bring cash. Even if they charge you 200$ to do it its better than the risk of losing >10K$ by being mugged, dropping it, plane crash, car crash, or lightning strike.

Go ask your bank if you can transfer it remotely once you are in aus. bring enough with you to surive 2 weeks and a credit card - then open an aussie bank account and transfer it remotely.

Western Union is CRAP!! I would speak to biggest local banks and work out a wire transfer deal. You can fill in the forms and leave the destination account null and then ask family to submit it with cash/check once you have an account in Oz.
