Default Decent cars and good dealers.

Well the time has come for us to invest in a 2nd car, 1 just is not going to cut it with me working all over the place.

Can people let me know which cars they have bought and if they have any dealers around Sun Coast or North Brisbane they would recommend.

In am looking for a small/medium car (Ford Focus size) I don't know whether to buy a new one for no more than $20 000, or to buy one a few years old.

Has anyone owned a KIA? We looked at a CERATO today and it is drive away for $18 990, comes fully loaded spec wise but is not well known over here yet as it was only launched last month.

Has anyone risked buying a car privately?
Is the RWC worth the paper it is written on or should you get further checks done?

Don't know about the Cerato but the Ford Laser/Escort was made by Kia.

I think Ford own Kia so check where the Focus is made.

Good luck

Hyundai has popular models in the size range you are looking at and they probably have a better reputation than Kia although both are Korean. I only bought privately once and got a lemon even after getting it checked out by the RACV so personally I'd always go to a dealer now. RWC means even less than MOT in UK so further checks are definitely in order. Good luck. Toyota has recently taken over as No.1 in Oz but I guess Corolla's/Yaris will be more expensive than their Korean cousins?

Kia is owned by Hyundai. The Cerato was launched in the Uk a short while ago and it looks like it is getting a good response there. Price is MUCH cheaper here 2.OL engine with air/elec win/ mirrors/CD and everything for $18 990 on the road ( includes all stamp etc) in the Uk there are quoting 9750 - 11995 pounds + on the road costs.

The only thing that worries me is what will the Aussies think of it when we go to sell it in 3-5 years? They love their Holdens and Fords out here a lot! Holdens are seen as prestige where as I see them as a pile of over-priced Vauxhall junk!

Hi Tina

You may be right about Hyundai/Kia but Ford is involved somewhere.

The Australian Ford Laser (especially the later ones were made by Kia).
Likewise a number of Holdens (such as the Corsa/Berlina) are made by Daihatsu.
Always worth checking where a car is made as many are made in the Far east under licence (including some japanese).

Good luck

I tend to agree with G, not that it is important. Ford own or have part-ownership of lots of other marques - Volvo and Mazda as well as Kia for example. (Is Jaguar another or is it German?) That's good advice about checking out where the car is made - you can get a cheaper VW by buying a Skoda or Seat for example as they are essentially the same thing. Our local Skoda dealer told me VW Passat/Bora etc owners get their parts there for a fraction of the cost and they are identical. But I digress!
