As to whether you should pay or not, that's a matter for your own sense of morality but it's unrealistic not to expect a number of people to be disapproving of deliberately ditching debt, especially since a lot of posters have worked so hard to repay debts remaining in the UK.

If you have no assets and no income, at least relative to the size of the debt, then you need to do a deal with creditors to accept a lesser amount in full and final settlement, or you need to consider declaring bankruptcy. Which forces the same outcome.

Abandoning debt is a bad idea - if you get into a better situation in future it can come back to haunt you, often after creditors have freely added on interest and "penalties".

Just a thought

Erm perhaps read the original post maybe.

She asked how Oz viewed having debt in anotehr country. She asks whether she had to pay it in full before leaving. She asks whether she has to pay it before she "apply for visas knowing that we will still have this money to pay off possibly before we go". She never said she was going to piss off and leave it.

Do we really need the Debt Brigade out in force?

My husband and Iw recently won our court case to remove my son from the UK to emigrate to Oz - totally over the moon. However,we now have a huge legal bill to pay off!! Just wondering how Oz views debt left in the UK. Is it best to have everything paid off and be debt free? Some advice reckons we need to start all over again with credit checks etc - so just not sure at the moment whether our time to emmigrate will be held back by paying off bills or whether we can go ahead and apply for visas knowing that we will still have this money to pay off possibly before we go - any advice greatly appreciated!!!

I believe it was your legal team that "won your case". Are you now seeking to avoid paying their fees ?

Can you please define "huge legal bill" and explain why your legal team was willing to extend so much credit, without asking how you intended to settle the account.

It does seem rather odd, that a firm of lawyers should extend a "huge" line of credit and commit themselves to a large amount of work and expenses without enquiring if the client had the ability to settle the account at the end of the day.

I guess that if "you" had lost the case, you and your family would be stuck in UK without the option of Australian emigration. Win or lose, your legal bills would have been the same, so how did you intend to settle your legal bills if leaving them in UK and emigrating to Oz hadn't been an option ?

The best of luck with your dilemma, but I do have to say, that if you want to leave your debts in UK and 'stiff' someone for their well deserved fees. Picking a successful lawyer as your mug of choice might not have been the smartest decision you ever made ;)

Who the ***** are you to ask her to explain herself like? She has not intimated that she intends to leave anything. Read it then clamber down off your high horse.

For anyone who only reads every other sentance and to avoid any misunderstanding - THIS IS NOT ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM DEBT IN UK

The original poster is asking how Aus views debt and there is absolutly no mention of running away without paying

Jeez, the sheer mention of debt creates a frenzy with some people round here:rolleyes:

Do we really need the Debt Brigade out in force?

You know what shits me about The Debt Brigade (TDB for short), there is usually someone that will say 'Why not pay it all off before you go - easy' and this is normally finished with a patronising ;) smile, as though they have come up with a solution to all the worries - go them!

They rarely if ever have the whole story and are usually quite good at merely selecting the word 'debt' before starting off with the above sentence, slowly going down the judgemental slope to 'you spent it, you pay for it' or whatever. Then someone will make comments about getting snacks/pizza in and various offers of popcorn.

In the meantime, hardly anyone has bothered to read the thread and the original OP is left feeling too scared to post and usually the most high and mighty TDB member will finish it by saying 'It wasnt me that ran away from my debt' and that kind of shit.

When in fact there is usually more to the post than meets the eye and the OP that initially came for advice is probably left thinking 'why bother'.

Then you get members from the Debt Brigade setting up pretend accounts posting shit like 'I owe millions, can I get away with it' (to start a row with other members of TDB) and someone falls into the trap and gives them inaccurate advice saying 'yes they can follow you across the Indian Ocean and track you down with dogs, guns and horses, they will reposess your wife/dog/husband/kid/cat/horse and sell it on and use your wifes minge as a money box to collect money to repay what you borrowed'.

Then someone will say 'Oh no they cant, I worked for a debt agency and I know the law' then real mud slinging and judgemental abuse goes on and normally carries on until a Mod says 'enough is enough' and closes the thread.

So let us save the Debt Brigade a whole lot of trouble, read the pissing post, read it properly and even if you don't agree with the reasons that the OP is posting for or what they are doing, take a step back and remember that while some people do run away from debt and doing this is not right, think before you post something so santimonious and judgemental and READ THE POST because that is not what she is saying.

And instead of handing out advice that comes from your own moral judgement, you would be better letting them know constructive and accurate facts that could actually help them into sorting themselves out rather than scare the shit out of them into doing something that could haunt them later.

And please, that bloody ;) does not cut it when you say 'why not pay it off' it really doesnt.
