Days out from Perth

Hi there

We're emigrating in October and have planned to start the whole thing with a bit of a trip round to see some places we've not already seen, we hope this will make the whole thing a little less scary! One of these places is Perth so the plan is to fly in there and hire a car for a week to do some sightseeing then fly on over to Adelaide, get another car and drive round, up the coast to Brisbane where we're hoping to settle.
Anyway, my question is - what can and should we realistically try to fit in whilst in Perth, bearing in mind they will probably need to be day trips? There's just the two of us so no kids to worry about corralling!
Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.:)

Loads of lovely places to travel daily to. Fremantle, the prison tour ( apparently very good in the evening), Bussleton, Bunbury, Mandurah, lovely for day trips without too much driving, River Cruises, Margaret River,Kings Park. Whiteman Park, Some lovely small towns in the Perth hills like Kalamunda,Darlington, Serpentine. Yanchep National Park, Further distant trips Monkey Mia (8-10 hr drive) stop off at Kalbari for the night to break the journey and on to Denham. Approx 30kms from Monkey Mia really beautiful but a long trip with just bush in between.
You will have plenty to do but not enough tme to do it.
Enjoy Yourselves

Good list. Lancelin/Cervantes (pinnacles) is another good day trip. Inland, York/Northam/New Norica is another.

Thanks John and Amazulu (cool name by the way!). Looks like we'll have our time filled, we haven't confirmed anything yet so I think we might see about an overnight trip to Monkey Mia, is it worth taking that amount of time out for? Would you say we're best to stay in the city itself too or look in Fremantle? Really appreciate your advice btw :)

A great day out from Perth is a trip through the Avon Valley. Head for Bullsbrook, take the turn-off to Chittering valley, then on to Toodyay. From there go to Northam, York and/or Beverley, all small rural towns very different from Perth's sprawling suburbia. You can return to Perth via the Brookton Highway and will have travelled approx. 300ks.

hire a car for a week to do some sightseeing
If you are only going to be in Perth for a week then I think you are right to stick to day trips. Although a drive down to Busselton check out the Underwater Observatory and then on to Margarate River area is managable. Margaret River is about a 3 hour drive from Perth. I would recommend the Bushtuker River Tour if your happy to jump in a canoe. There is heaps to do down on the South West Coast of WA.

A day or two in Perth is a must, you can get a ticket for a Two Day Triple Tour Ticket and see Perth remembering Kings Park and Freemantle. Or a perhaps get on a Captain Cook cruise up into the Swan Valley.

Freemantle another great place to see, I have not done the prison tour but my hubby has and really enjoyed it. You can even go down into the tunels on some tours. Then there is the markets

Hey I best stop there as you will be running out of time. Take time to enjoy Perth and dont just race round to see everything or you will just be exhausted.

Unless you feel you must I would not worry about travelling North as you will spend more time driving than seeing anything, save that for when you have a little longer. (although the Pinnacles is manageable but if you do stay at one of the local hotels and get up to see them at sunrise). You could perhaps then stop off at Yanchep National Park on the way back into Perth.

Hey you never know you may fall in love with the laid back life style we have over here and choose to locate to Perth WA.

Whatever you do have fun and good luck.

Thanks for all that info guys, and thanks Sharon for the links. There seems to be so much to do that we're thinking of adding an extra day to that part of the trip and maybe going up to Monkey Mia (via Pinnacles etc) and staying there for a night. Would that be enough or would we need two days up there? There are dolphin 'experiences' in a few places we're visiting but I get the feeling one on that coast would be particularly special and less touristy. Is that right?
Will definitely do Rottnest and Margaret River so thanks for the tips there!
