What days holiday per year do you get in australia roughly?

Is it similar to the UK?

Usually 20 days rec leave plus Christmas & Boxing day, New years day, easter, anzac day, Australia day plus sundry state specific others.

Personal leave usually accrues so you will get some time for sick/carers leave - that can depend on the award under which you are employed. You begin to accrue Long Service Leave as soon as you start employment and that mounts up to be 3 months after 10 years generally but you cant access that until about 7 years employment.

Some employers have flexi time - you can build up a bank of up to 22 hours and that enables you to take a day or two off.

The general rule is 20 a year. My company made me take 15 of these at Xmas!!! So not quite like the UK.

I got 8 paid sick days

No maternity pay (the average is 12wks)

Hubby got 5 days unpaid paternity

So the employment t&c's are not as favourable as the UK

currently get 28days A/L

paid sick upto 6 months

9months paid maternity

2wks paternity for men

Wont stop us returning to Oz but wont be a shock second time round!!

All companies would make you take them at xmas would they?

So i would get roughly 20 days holiday , plus every weekend off (if the job was mon to fri) , plus the other public holiday days off.

That doesnt sound too bad at all

My SIL works at a day care centre at a University. She gets about 24 days AL, plus all the public holidays, plus a roster day every month (basically a 'free' day off as long as she does so many hours a month. She has it sweet!

Australia has 11 public holidays a year, compared with the UK's 8. Anyway, everyday in Australia is a holiday. However, a previous Aussie employer of mine also imposed obligatory holiday during Christmas and New Year (somewhat at odds with their espoused Diversity policy I thought, and fortunately my line manager was enlightened and agreed it was unfair and we quietly ignored it - ie I got Christmas/New Year for free).

Depends who you work for and under what agreement.

Standard would be 4wks annual leave,sometimes with 17.5% leave loading to make up for lost timekeeping bonuses etc.5 wks for shift work.

Sick leave of 10 days per year,sometimes it can be accrued ,sometimes it will be paid out at the end of the year.

10 days public holiday approx ,depending on state public hols .

Some companies work a 4 day week,some a 9 day fortnight.Some 1 RDO off per month.Some finish lunch time on Friday and no RDO.

Should you work for flat rate then you are only paid for hrs worked,no hols ,sick leave etc,no o/time rates.For my game (metalwork ) you would need around $41 per hr flat to make up for lost public hols,annual leave,o/time rates etc.

Really it all depends on the industry you are in and if they are under EBA or AWA agreements.

Long service leave of 13 weeks after 10 or 15 yrs depending on who you work for.

I get 20 days holiday + the Public holidays per year.

In the UK I could take holidays in advance of earning them but here I have to earn them before taking them not sure if all companys are like this but most people say that's normal here.

Ok, here's all I know on wages and conditions. These are federal and state minimums, not company specific so it it the least amounts payable.

Workplace Agreements:

Australia workplace agreements are individual negotiated agreements between an employer and an employee. They must be signed by the employee and must be approved by the Office of Employment Advocate.

Informal Agreements:

Informal agreements between an employer and employee may be written or verbal. This type of agreement is not normally registered or approved by any authority, but must be at least equivalent to the minimum conditions under federal award.

Annual Leave:

The amount of paid holiday is 4 week per annum. Some awards allow for an extra's week leave if a certain number of Sundays have been worked during the year. Casual and Contract employees are not entitled to holiday pay.

Annual Leave Loading:

Annual leave loading was initially introduced to ensure employees were not at a financial disadvantage when they took annual leave. It was pointed out that employees received more than their normal award rate of pay each week (shift allowance, penalties and overtime). Since the end of 1974, a leave loading of 17.5% on ordinary rates of pay is recognized as a standard feature of state and federal awards however some awards provide a higher payment.

Annual leave loading is not payable on annual leave taken in advance. (After 6 months of employment you would have accrued 2 weeks annual leave, and you may be allowed to take it. Any leave taken before your one year anniversary would be deemed as leave taken in advance.)Annual leave loading would need not be paid in these circumstances, however it would be paid on your one year anniversary. (This is company specific, some pay it and other don't.)

Long Service Leave:

In 1955 the NSW government passed the Long Service Leave Act that gave three calendar months leave to employees after 15 years of service, all other states followed with similar legislation. Long service Leave (LSL) was designed to provide employees with the opportunity to take an extended break from work in recognition of the length of service with one employer.

Not all awards include LSL, in these cases State legislation applies. Entitlements differ between states as follows:

Federal Award: 15 years service - 13 weeks leave. Subsequent leave of 2 months after a further 10 years.

NSW: 10 years service - 2 months leave. subsequent leave of 1 month after 5 years.

Victoria: 15 years service - 13 weeks. Subsequent leave of 1 month after 5 years.

Queensland: 15 years service - 13 weeks. Subsequent leave of 13 weeks after 15 years.

South Australia: 10 years service - 13 weeks. Subsequent leave of 13 weeks after 10 years.

Western Australia: 15 years service - 13 weeks. Subsequent leave of 2 months after 10 years.

Tasmania: 15 years service - 13 weeks. Subsequent leave of 2 months after 10 years.

NT: 10 years service - 15 weeks. Subsequent leave of 6 and half weeks after 5 years.

ACT: 10 years service - 2 months. Subsequent leave 1 month after 5 years.

Unused long service leave would be payable to employees on termination of employment. Once again qualifying periods differ, NSW, Vic, QLD and WA is 10 years. SA, Tas, NT and ACT is 7 years. LSL is paid on the ordinary rate of pay only.

All employees are entitled to this, even casual staff.

Sick Leave:

In the mid 1970's the entitlement of holidays changed to increase after the first year of employment. The federal standard is 40 hours in the first year and 64 hours for each subsequent year.

Awards vary though, so you need to check your relevant award to check you are getting the correct entitlement.

Casual Employees: Casual employees receive an additional loading on top of their ordinary rate. This is usually something like 20%, but will differ between awards.

Working shift work as a nurse, I get 5 weeks holiday for parttime and 6 weeks holiday for fulltime work. Also get rostered day off once per month, as well as public holiday pay.

Many employers now are moving away from holiday pay and sick leave, carer leave etc to all-encompassing "personal leave" which you can use as you like.

I'm a nurse and get 4 weeks plus 1 extra week as a shift worker plus 11 days for public holidays to be taken whenever, so in total 7 weeks and 1 day. Also work 40 hrs a week, get paid for 38 and therefore build up hours to be taken when needed.
