Re: A day in Melbourne
I'd take a trip up one of the towers (Eureka or Rialto) especially if its a clear day.
If you're into pubs then here's a list http://www.melbournepubs.com/search?...b=&ve_c=&ve_r=
I'd recommend a trip to the Portland Hotel (aka James Squire Brewery) and just down the road is the Elephant and Wheelbarrow if you fancy a pommie beer.
You could take a trip on the recently opened Southern Star (big wheel). It's just opened so I don't know how good it is. Apparently it's not attracting the expected numbers so it's easy to get on. Someone's already had sex on it so be careful which carriage you choose.
The Casino is on the south bank if you're interested in losing a bit of dough.
Take a ride on the circle tram (which is free). The bit down LaTrobe St is a bit pokey but the rest of it is mostly good. There is a free tourist bus that leaves from southbank and takes you around some of the attractions.
Cook's cottage is in Fitzroy gardens if you want to remind yourself how pokey the housing was in the UK
I've not been but I've had good reports about the sports museum at the MCG.
If you want a beach then there are loads around the bay so just head towards the bay possibly St Kilda if you want to see the seedier side of Mellie as well.
It's a wide open topic. What are you mainly interested in?

One memorable night when the Commonwealth games was on. There were a whole group of Canadian Athletes in there... The Girls in the group decided they could put on a better show than the Local Aussie strippers... Twas a great night !

Re: A day in Melbourne
Just spent a weekend in Melbourne. Would suggest the Eureka Tower, hubby and daughter weht in the glass thing that goes outside.....to scarey for me.
Did the boat ride and went to the casino, both OK.
Highlight pf the trip was going to the theatre to see Wicked and pre theatre dinner at 15.
have fun

Re: A day in Melbourne
Yeah, hosies shut a good 6 months ago, a few of us had to plan a stag night a while ago and were looking forward to a visit to hosies.
Was always good as most nights there was no cover charge & drinks were at regular pub prices.
IIRC it's now some upmarket place called dreams or something similar.
Mate of mine went there, said it's basically a refurbished hosies at 3x the old prices >:-<

Re: A day in Melbourne
- Morning - Breakfast at a street Cafe in the Lanes
- Sightseeing - Some walk about Federation Square, visit old Melbourne Jail, wander around the CBD and see why people love working there, go up the Eureka Tower SkyDeck and see the view
- Lunch - Walk 200m from Eureka Tower to World Bar on Southbank, more people/river watching over lunch with a nice snack and a good beer
- More sightseeing - Cross to Flinder St and get the free tram round to Carlton and the Melbourne Museum, maybe take in an IMAX, have a look at the Immigration Museum or perhaps the Botanical Gardens. Maybe visit the Aquarium. Take a boat trip up the Yarra or from Southbank to Williamstown
- 6pm'ish - Taxi to St Kilda Baths then beers at the Beach bar with the hanging egg basket seats (Republica? - as see on UK TV's "Relocation, Relocation") watching the world go by on the beach promenade.
- Evening - Walking down into Akland St in St Kilda, have some dinner and a walk about. Taxi back to Southbank, go to the Crown for a flutter on the Blackjack.
Unless we know your age and what your into it's not easy. The MCG is really interesting if your into Footy or Cricket, but dull as pants if your not.
