Re: DAB / Digital Radio
There are only a couple of digital radio broadcasters, that I know of in Aus at present. I've no idea why this is the case. I'd say your average Aussie wouldn't even know of digital radios existence.
I only know about it, via picking up stations via my set top box, and reading about the stations in the UK.
Having said that, I would say your box would work, as all it would need would be a software update at the most, via the upgrade port.... trouble is there is hardly anything to listen to.
Not due to be rolled out properly until 2010, apparently.

Ours does. Really glad we bought it with us. Sydney has a number of test stations.

Re: DAB / Digital Radio
Mine doesn't. Outside the test area now anyway...
Cambridge Audio DAB300 (Hi Fi separate tuner)
Be aware that technology currently undergoing trial may not be what's eventually rolled out - there's a plan to introduce increased compression in the final version to give extra bandwith for other stuff.
No harm in taking it all the same...
Big.

I was surprised when it didn't - and I lived in Chatswood at the time, which I thought would be ideal if the test was coming from Willoughby.
I'm further north now and last time I checked it was outside the area.
I suppose I'll keep it and see what happens.
When I lived in London I found myself listening to more radio that I ever had before, the sound quality so good. I was particularly fond of LBC.

Re: DAB / Digital Radio
We're undecided as to whether or not to take ours. We love it here and even bought a DAB radio alarm as OH loves Planet Rock so much. We're heading to Melbourne but from what I've read, it has no coverage and I can't find any reference to when it will be rolled out there. Does anyone know if there are plans to give Melbourne DAB?

Afaik, there are two digital broadcasters at present, on free to air that is. The ABC and SBS, hardly inspiring listening. Fox has around 20 stations on its service, I find myself using the AIR channel on Fox as background music quite often. I play it through my Stereo System, and it is a very useful service.

Sounds like internet radio thru' a PC gives better choice, only prob there is the time difference. Although BBC is doing more podcasts now...

Hi
This subject has been raised before some months ago.
It really is like the Middle Ages here for digital radio. They've been trialling it, supposedly, for ages. They know it works from the UK model so why not just get on with it, unless, of course, its a major political issue which is falling between the federal and state governments (as many other things appear to do!)
I've Emailed the ABC trialling centre 3 times over the past 2 years to enquire on the progress (or lack of it) and they haven't even bothered to respond. Says it all really
My Pure Evoke is sitting in the corner gathering dust!

Digital radio has been bypassed in this country, in favour of Internet radio. With Wifi hotspots popping up all over the place and bandwidth increasing, its a case of local product versus worldwide product, or 20 to 30 local stations versus 1,000s no contest really. DAB = the old Betamax, the UK was the only country that truly embraced it.
So turf the DAB receivers, and hook into the following, they will go up to Audiophile quality once the bandwidth allows.

Heres a better one...

Thanks for that - or not
There was me waiting for Australia to wake up to DAB and it already appears out of date!
I'll check out those 2 sites but I certainly wouldn't want a product that required me to sit alongside my noisy PC in order to listen to music with the same clarity as I enjoyed with DAB in UK. I suspect, however, that the PC will have to be online to operate these new gadgets which, of course, will burn up my monthly download limit.

Heres the nail in the coffin, courtesy of a UK tech site.....

Most broadband providers, now offer unlimited downloads at 512kbs so download limits are no longer a problem, as time goes by the limitless downloads will apply to faster speeds.
