d.i.y. plumbing
Is it legal for me to put in another water tap by tapping an existing pipe for one in my house
so I have to "tap" the pipe, put a hose in (using the PVC stuff) , and then another tap off it. Is that legal or do I need a plumber.

I'm not sure, but if tapping the pipe doesn't work, try banging it with a spanner.

If it's connected the mains then it's probably illegal.
However. Who'll know? I'd just do it.

Faced with a 320$ bill from a plumber, or the threat of me doing it , the plumber has been booked by she who must most definitely be obeyed.
I could've done it , no sweat. Given the right length of time, and 300$ of tools from bunnings.

Then told him I was doing it myself as I was on tank water & it was not his concern
Bloody plumbers, licence to print money: $8 bucks for an outside tap $6 for a compression "T" $4 for a compression elbow & $8 for a 1m length of 1/2" pipe Total of $26 buck in fittings. 1 hour in time inc travel from 4 houses away Quote $250 from very local plumber.
I did it myself in 1/2 hour.

Lol you don't have to explain up here either. I just happened to be at the trade counter paying & he started up a "friendly" conversation while he was waiting, ended up quoting building regs etc etc.

Restricting people from doing their own electrics makes more sense than plumbing. I can see that in the past may have made sense to protect mains supplies from contamination when pressures were lower. I don't think it makes much sense now except maybe from a water conservation point of view.

We were having this very debate at work just this week. I can understand that you should restrict people from meddling with gas installations etc, but struggle to see the rationale with preventing people from adding an extra tap or changing a shower fitting etc.
I was curious if people's willingness to tinker with the plumbing also extended to tinkering with the electrics. I do find it a little niggling that I am expected to invite an electrician into my home to replace a light fitting or a socket or something, particularly when you consider the astronomical fees they charge because of their licenced monopoly...
Grrr...
