Cyclone?
Just received a phone call from the school to pick the children up f because of a possible imminent Cyclone (Gold Coast), is this just the teachers wanted an extended weekend or is this serious?
Anyone have any accurate info? It's supposed to be travelling down from the Sunshine Coast. Slater |

It is a storm rather than a full blown cyclone. |
We are with friends at Redcliffe at the moment and it is very windy and chucking it down. There are actually waves here.
|
The wind and rain does seem to be getting a bit worse now, but its not as bad as it was the other week.
|
Just said on the news it will be peaking at tea time.

Re: Cyclone?
I'm in Brisbane and it's just light rain. Wife & kids are at home in Caloundra, and I can't contact them at the moment - hope they haven't been evacuated!!!
Plus my car's broken down at the station today - great timing or what! Up here on the Sunny Cyclone Coast :D its just started to get a bit worryng. The big palms trees, some 50 foot high are bending like twigs:scared: rains driving in from all directions and the creek looks like a wild water rapids, honestly its blazing down there, it comes from the top of Buderim and if you fell in you'd be swept away at the moment:eek:
Its not a cylcone tho, but winds are supposed to step up to similar to a category 2 type wind and rain. i would imagine by this afternoon some of the low roads will go under a bit. Stocked up with candles, got the gas bottle to cook on and the dog has taken his blanket and set himself up under the tumble dryer. If you dont hear from me for a while you know why:D |
wow IT SOUNDS great...I know it wouldn't be to be in it, but it's a case of light the Argar and get the kittens in the basket...hmm I can smell the warm bread now. (or am I just mad)

TOP PRIORITY SEVERE WEATHER WARNING Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane at 1:47pm EST on Friday the 5th of March 2004 For coastal and island communities between Rundle Island [near Gladstone] and Coolangatta and extending up to 120km inland south of Gayndah. A DANGEROUS SITUATION CONTINUES IN THE SOUTHEAST AS A LOW WITH CENTRAL PRESSURE 994 HPA CURRENTLY 100KM NORTHEAST OF BUNDABERG CONTINUES TO MOVE SOUTHWESTWARDS TOWARDS THE SOUTH QUEENSLAND COAST. Destructive wind gusts to 130 km/h are expected between Fraser Island and Coolangatta this afternoon and overnight. Winds will gradually ease between Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast this evening. Damaging wind gusts to 100 km/h will continue between Fraser Island and Rundle Island [near Gladstone] for the next few hours. Damaging wind gusts to 100 km/h may also develop up to about 120 km inland south of Gayndah later this afternoon and tonight, particularly on the exposed high ground. Large waves are expected to continue to increase in height and could produce water levels just above the highest tides of the year towards evening south of Fraser Island. People should keep out of the water while these large waves persist. Heavy rain is expected to develop with some local flooding. People between Rundle Island and Coolangatta and through inland parts should secure outside items, take any necessary precautions and listen for the next warning which will be issued at 5pm this afternoon. Make sure you are ready for it, although it looks like it may cross the coast further north than 1st thought. Technically, its not a cyclone which has a barometre reading of less than 990HPa. Technicalities can still kill people. |

We have had very little rain here so far , my guess is only about an inch but I heard on the radio just before that the Sunshine Coast has had between 3 & 4 inches since 9am. No wonder poor dotty is being washed away :scared:  :scared:

Originally posted by ABCDiamond It's been raining here almost all day ! And we are Not that far away from you. Did you take a drive round here after the school pick up ? We have had rain, but its been patchy & nothing heavy at all so far. |
Mrs D, if this is not much rain then we've seriously underestimated Brisbane storms:scared:
|
Agreed, eshing it down.
|
Update, one small power cut, and several low roads in Bli Bli and Palmwoods are now cut off, it really does not seem that windy tho, just pouring with rain since about 9am. Beach was fun, rain was coming in so hard it felt like hail, its certainly not a cyclone, more like the extreme rain that will have half the roads cut off up here in the morning. Boring night in with a DVD for me then as long as the power lasts:(

Michaela, trust me, you have seen NOTHING until you have seen a thunderstorm here. Dagboy often used to comment on the heavy rain when we were in the UK & I would be thinking "What? This? this is a light shower!". Then he came over here & realised that heavy means you cant see more than 6 feet in front of your car (& thats when its stopped ;) ) |
Not raining particularly hard here at the mo. Been raining on and off all day but no worse than a typical English summer day:) :).
Not seen a REALLY bad storm for a couple of years now, and no power cuts since about 6 weeks ago. |
Originally posted by MrsDagboy Its started raining heavier in the last hour or so, particularly the last 15 mins, but honestly, it hasnt been that heavy here. We have a storm water drain & a floodway at the back of our house, it hasnt even started running yet. Michaela, trust me, you have seen NOTHING until you have seen a thunderstorm here. I did experience a queensland hail storm a few years ago and that was pretty spectacular. We lost power earlier but only for a few minutes. |
Our floodway has started running now, its been raining heavier for the last hour. When I start to blow bubbles you will know that we've had a bloody lot of rain! ;)
Had a power cut of about 5 secs before, was back on before I could even get out of the chair to get candles. Hoping it stays on until after dinner at least, although we have the BBQ if we need it. |

But i've got a torch on my desk just in case the power goes later :D Problem is that the torch batteries run out without being used, by the time I get to need them !! :) |
We are slap bang middle of Gold coast and its raining hard!
Palm trees are sideways and strangely no ones using the pool?? No lightning or thunder just strong winds and lots of rain. Im desperate to go to the store for ice cream but not sure if its worth getting soaked through for.... Maybe if they had ben n jerrys here i might.. |

No lasting damage then guys?
And did the store still have the ice cream.....? Marko |
Woke this morning expecting to find a lot of damage but theres nothing really. The wind speed indicator peaked at 41 knots during the night and the boat was "hobby horsing " violently for most of the night. No power cuts here [very unusual you can sneeze and black out homes sometimes  ]
The rivers are all in flood and Tin Can Bay is cut off from the rest of the world but that's nothing new either. Sean |

Originally posted by ABCDiamond No damage here, and the pegs are still in the basket hanging on the washing line :D The polythene sheeting covering the framework of the flowerfarm next door is still intact too. :) Nice green grass though :) Aall of suden  |
No major damage here either, luckily it wasnt very intense. Driving around this morning there are quite a few trees down & branches off etc, but nothing major.
And today is such a beautiful day, blue sky, albeit a little windy still & everything looks so fresh & clean :). |
12.00 Noon the news reported 70,000 homes still without power.
We lost power for about 15-30 minutes last night. Lots of small branches and greenery on the ground in the local area. Windsurfers out on Moreton Bay today, enjoying the fast moving water. |
