Customs Duty

I am planning to buy a few new electronic items like a computer, a cam-corder, DVD player etc. before moving to Melbourne.

Since these would be less than 12 months old, they might attract customs duty when they land in Aus. I looked up the Aus Customs homepage, to check the rate of duty applicable, but could not find any info there.

Does anyone on this NG have any idea about this? Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers

Re: Customs Duty

gst or vat is 10%. I doubt if you would need to prove ownership of 12 months if you
are coming to live. Perhaps on the computer if it is an expensive one.

Re: Customs Duty

I was mulling over the idea of buying a digital camera whilst in Dubai on a 3 hour stopover from Munich to Melbourne. Would it be worth it, and can I even get to Duty Free when simply in-transit ?

Don't talk to me about customs
We got stopped in Perth and were held for 3 hours-just cos they found 6 inches of crack in Mrs B's knickers !!!!!

(make the most of this post,I'm expecting it to be moderated big time)

Worth it - Read below. Duty free in transit - Yes.

BTW before you leave Germany, make sure you do research on what you want to buy and
what you should pay for it (know australian cost at least). Because, with what you
bought in Dubai may not be considered warranted in Australia.

I am from US, I go to Australia every year and find that if I were living in
Australia I would certainly buy computers locally in Australia (only about 10% more
expensive) - however, digital cameras I would buy in US as until at least April (my
last visit) they were about 40% more expensive than I could buy comparable in US.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't bother to buy computer etc in the uk the same price or cheaper in australia plus your screwed if they go wrong and the warrenty's from the uk. As for the camera in dubai it should be a bit cheaper plus you get lots of extras thrown in. If your stopping in singapore thats the best place to buy cameras.

Re: Customs Duty

or better still kuala lumpa, cheaper again even than singapore,
also if your actually staying over i.e leaving the airport in these places buying is cheaper again in the local shops, but be prepared to haggle hard
i bought a digi camera on way to oz last time, i was chuffed as nuts looking in shops in oz thought i had a real bargin till we stopped for a few days in singapore on the way home and found the camera 15% cheaper again in local electronic shops. and dont forget you can claim the tax back if you spend over a certain amount in these countrys, as you leave the airport, before departing.

oh and if you have an adress in oz you can use the multi shop plazas usually have a shipping shop in em were you can reasonably have your items packed and sent on,
i think it might be a way of sneaking past the tax trap if its not on your person?
