Default Current IT Job situation in Australia

Hi there

Can anyone tell me what the current situation is like in the Australian IT jobs market (permanent and contract)?

Ive heard that its slowly starting to pick up or is this a myth?

If is still stagnant are there any clues as to when it could pick up or are they in a situtation simliar to the US and Britain?

Many Thanks

I am afraid as far as I can see it is still very slow. It is a buyers market for IT skills and they will turn you down unless you have every skill to match their selection criteria, including down to the correct version number of something.

Today I celebrate 1 year being unemployed!! Last September when all employers paniced and stopped contracts and new employees, I had my contract terminated .... since then nothing.!

Good luck. Sorry for bad news.

I hear your pain, although it's sad to hear the IT slowdown is not isolated to North America as I first thought.

I guess now isn't the right time to consider Australia/New Zealand!

Depends on your speciality - some IT people are still in demand (Aus). In NZ, IT situation generally reported to be OK.

6+ years of real-time mission-critical systems, primarily Road and Air Traffic Systems.

I've never seen this particular system live, but I worked on the Road Traffic system that was put in place in Sydney for the Olympics.

Odd isn't it. A few weeks ago when I had an informal sniff around a couple of agencies I had two seperate offers.

It seems that they either want precise specialisations (SAP and OS/2 anyone?) or generalists with loads of experience - interesting one in the press last week for a PC support officer at Adelaide Airport they wanted a bit of just about everything, couple of weeks ago there was another very interesting one for an IT manager for a council in Adelaide Hills.

I've got the luxury of time to play with and hope things will pick up even more by 2004 but if not I'm willing to flip burgers if necessary.

Hi Perry,

Would you mind sharing the contacts of the agencies for job hunting.

I'm not sure if the IT situation in Oz is as bad as it's made out everywhere.. I think Perth and some of the smaller cities have been hit bad but there still seems to be a lot of work in Sydney and Melbourne. I regularly look at the jobsites and though there seems to be not too many contracts there is a lot of permanent work especially in C++ and Java.
I contracted in Oz for 2 and a half years and I don't think I'd contract there ever again as it's a very volatile market . I was based in Perth and I found it the worst in that due to it being a small town there's not enough work to contract in. Very quickly you can end up having done contracts for the big 3 companies in Perth ( ERG, Motherwell, Sealcorp ) and then there's no where else to go...
