Default Cronulla & surrounds

Were hoping to be working out of Bankstown Airport and heard that there are some nice areas along the Georges River in the Sutherland Shire, especially towards Cronulla. Any feedback esp on (public) schools and local communities would be great! There in 2 weeks yikes!

Define local communities.

I lived in the Shire for 4-5 years, Sylvania Heights and Caringbah mainly. I know the area pretty well, though I know nothing about schools.

Huge shopping centre at Miranda.

There's some wonderful parts, Oyster Bay, Burraneer, Lilli Pilli, etc. The Georges River itself is great for fishing or just having a pleasant drift downstream.

Used to fish a lot between Menai and Taren Point; quite a few oyster farms along there as well.

Nice part of the world.

Sorry. Don't know Schools too well either, but Cronulla is where I'd pick if going to Sydney. It's self contained with great facilities - shops, restaurants, fantastic beach, cinema etc. It also has a good link to the centre although train takes about an hour.

Surrounding area's are nice too especially Port Hacking, although it is quite expensive, and you'd probably need a car to live there.

Great shopping centre at Miranda.

I was in Cronulla recently (we have a friend who lives there albeit at the YHA) and was staggered at the house prices but I assume you are prepared for that? Other than that the area was beautiful and you can get a train direct to Sydney, though Diddy was right, it takes about an hour but off peak very cheap!

any evidence that rental prices are levelling off - or that there is scope for negotiating rent? May be we will have to opt for outskirts of expensive area! we are only going there on a reccomendation. Are there places to avoid?

Hi,

I'm based at Bankstown airport too, training at Basair. We're currently renting in Lane Cove which is nice, but too far really (traffic wise) and not on the coast. In a few months we'll be looking at Cronulla too for an appartment to buy, especially as wifey has just landed a job in Smithfield. Straight up the motorway. Too easy...David Campese....as they say out here....

I've been reading about Rents going up soon.

Following the NSW tax changes on Investment properities, this is one of the reported comments "If investors decide they are going to get better returns interstate we could have a shortage of rental properties in NSW somewhere down the track and this will of course push up rents,"
I for one am looking at increasing the rents, or selling up in NSW.

It's different for CBD apartments, as there is an oversupply, which should keep rents stable, other than a small rise to counter the new land tax. But houses ??, that looks like a different story. Landlords want to get back to realistic returns, and not the 3-4% returns they are now getting.

There is only one selective public school in the area - Caringbah High - but the non selective ones seem pretty decent. Also there are some private religious schools that have reasonable fees. Cronulla itself is ludicrously overpriced for property. There are some very peaceful suburbs - Illawong, Alfords point & Como spring to mind - and the first two will be v.quick to commute to Bankstown. Take a look at http://www.ourshire.com.au/
