CRN - What is it and do I need one?

Ok, when we first arrived in Oz my OH bought a wee banger of a car outright for 5k, he had to get a CRN before the dealer would let him have it, no problem, he got it sorted. Then we got a second car and the dealer said something about my needing a CRN, is this true? If so, am I currently driving illegally by not having one? Kinda starting to get worried now!? So could someone explain what a CRN is and if my OH having one is enough, or do I need one too?! (In case it's important, I already have my QLD drivers license.)

Googled CRN and it came up as a Customer Reference Number for Centrelink.

Why a car dealer would want that is beyond me........

Your CRN is your Drivers Licence Number if you have one.

Some people may not hold a licence in which case QLD transport will allocate a CRN to them. For example, someone buying a car before they have the licence issued will be in that boat.

So I'm safe then as I have my QLD driving license?
