Default Criminology Degree

Hi, I'm looking at going to Australia next year to spend two years doing the working holiday visas. I am hopefully wanting to stay and either find a job with my Criminology degree or at the moment I work for the NHS as a community nursing assistant. I'm just wondering which will be the easiest option, finding a job wise?

Thanks

A working holiday visa is for 12 month, not 2 years. You can apply for a second 12 months if you meet the requirements (3 months of regional work and still meeting the original requirements).

As for staying after, you will need a skill on the list of eligible occupations to apply for a skilled permanent visa. The alternative is to meet a nice Australian and fall in love. Partner visas don't require a skill.

I'm pretty sure but not certain that a Criminology degree in the UK would hold any weight in Australia but then I'm not 100% what a Criminology degree actually covers. Your current employment 'might' assist you in finding a visa but it depends on your experience, what your work entails and whether you have a degree in that field. As Dorothy says a WHV whether you get the two years or not, won't lead on to PR. Go through the official website https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/visa-1 and see if you are qualified for a work visa. Have a great time on the WHV, travel around, make sure you definitely want to live in Aus and go from there.

A criminology degree means nothing in terms of ability to get a visa. Nor does your current occupation. You need an occupation on the skilled lists. A WHV is unlikely to get you that.

Thanks for the replies, I've researched into the working holiday visas and know the requirements so I'm wanting to do the first and second WHV (2 years). I was just wondering if I had a degree if I would find it easier to get work, but I'll keep looking on the skilled list.

Kirsty, is your Criminology degree a specialist psychology degree with a Criminology major? Just wondered as one of my sisters in Australia has a psych Masters - her study program consisted of several foundation psychology units and students were free to choose elective units in a specialism of interest. My sister chose Criminology, hence the major.

You've had some good advice on this thread. Your degree is valuable but not sufficient as a stand alone qualification for skilled migration. Have a great time on your WHV and have a good scout around.

Do you just want to come on a WHV for a couple of years then go home Or is your intention to stay in Australia and get PR?

Not really. There are plenty of Australian graduates scrambling around looking for work. Because you are limited to working for an employer for six months, you are very unlikely to be looking at graduate level work (employers aren't keen on spending time and money on someone who has to leave six months later). Hence the majority of people on a WHV find themselves doing things such as bar and restaurant work. The best advice I would give is to get your regional work out of the way first as I have seen many leave it till too late before they find something. Also, it means when you get to the six month point you can sell yourself to an employer as potentially available to work for them for a year as you can do six months for the same employer per visa.
