Crime rate falls in Qld:
Just a few selective crime figures here...
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...13/2742214.htm
Statistics for the last financial year show the overall rate of crime in Queensland has dropped by 3 per cent in a year, and by 26 per cent over the past nine years.
This includes an 8 per cent drop in murders and a 21 per cent fall in sexual assaults.
Drug offences are down by 11 per cent.
However, robbery is up by 6 per cent.

I read in the courrier today that crime in QLD has gone through the roof. The polic dept are blaming the recession on higher crime figures. This could be true. but who can you believe these days, the tabloids

The only way i can see to a reduction in the crime figures, is by less lenient sentencing in the courts, because quite frankly at the moment its a bit of a farce.

It's a complete joke at times. I can never understand the logic with some sentencing.
We need an island to send all these criminals away to....

okay - okay I was just trying to be polite to the judiciary! The reality is that many sentancing decisions are a total disgrace. I think we should move to a US styled system, where magistrates are elected. Then if sentancing no longer reflects societies expectations, they can be sacked.

I have heard this before, but it leaves me somewhat perplexed, as 95% of the people we arrest have never worked, and have no interest in working whatsoever, so the recession really does not affect them, its just 'business as usual.' I think the recession is just an easy scape goat for an increase in crime figures.

I also agree that this is a good excuse for a rise in crime.
I am a believer that as people get hard up they are more likely to be what you could class as a 'opportunist thief', thats a broad statement, its not targeted at anyone. But I do think there is some correlation between wealth and crime. Not saying its all because of that, but I am confident it is influenced by it.
Yes harder sentencing would keep them locked up for longer and reduce crime, but at what cost ? Rehabilitation is the answer. Its proven, how many people do you arrest that are repeat offenders >? Quite a few I bet...May I suggest that punishment alone is not the answer for a long term solution.
