hi , we want to hire a car when we first move to oz for a week or so but i know we have to have a visa /credit card to hold for security however we dont have one in the uk.
we have just opened a account with anz bank but to what we understand you cant get one till your in oz and showed id

what has every one else done in this case

Why dont you apply for one in the UK now whilst you still have employment etc. That way you can use it in the interim whilst you set your Aus accounts up etc.

Although I refuse to have any credit card debt, I would be lost without a card generally speaking for paying for a lot of things. Our debit cards have a daily limit on them and to do a largish transaction means you need a visa/mastercard/amex etc. Handy things to have. Just remember to pay it off at the end of the month!

If you want a card in the UK howabout looking at the Nationwide visa card? they are more than happy with you moving overseas and they charge you nothing for using the card. If you pay it off in full each month from your bank account it is effectivly fee free borrowing and should be fine for hiring your car

If you have a debit card that says 'visa' on it.. they will accept that. Thats how we paid when we travelled around oz in2003. We hired quite a few cars with our UK debit card. Its the visa symbol they look for.

We have an account with ANZ graned we are already here but hubby applied for a card on line or over the phone can't remember which but all i know is it turned up the other day with an accompanying letter asking him to take his 100 points of id into the branch (if been in country less than 6 weeks all you need is your passport) he got given a $10000 limit and we have only been here 6 weeks.
