CRB check

hi can anyone help?
I am a registered childminder and my CRB check is due to be renewed shortly. I am hoping to be in Oz later this year so what I need to know is, will this be an adequate police check for any nursery nurse jobs that i apply for or will I need to get one done in OZ.

Thanks carol

Hi Carol
Not sure what you will have to have when out in OZ but for visas a current CRB is not acceptable you have to have a different kind of police check. Maybe if you put PCC (police clearance check) in the search alot of threads should come up and you never know there could be an answer to your question.

As CRB checks are only really valid on the day you get them done, I would be very surprised if it is accepted in Oz, also I know with my CRB I have to get a new one done with every different establishment I work at (I coach sports in schools etc) I suppose that covers the fact they are only valid on the day done.

Hope that helps:unsure:

Hi
Not all CRB checks are valid just for one day......Me & Hubby are Carers for Social services and we have CRB checks done every 4/5 yrs. They have an expiry date when they need to be redone.

It depends what level check you have. I have an 'enhanced' CRB so they do differ.

Technically speaking any police check is only valid on the day it is done, becuase the moment it is printed it is out-of-date - this is because any conviction you get after that moment doesn't appear on the check. However, because this is unrealistic from the point of having the checks constantly redone, they are taken as valid for a certain length of time - that time depends on the type of check.

CRB checks are not valid as police checks for immigration purposes, for that you need a Subject Access check.

For a job in Aus requiring a police check, they will often only require an Aus check - they cannot force you to obtaina check from the UK, nor can they apply for one themselves without very good cause (and then only via the police here). If you have a CRB check its worth bringing it with you and offering it to them, but they may not be interested.

Thanks Pollyanna you have confirmed what I put in my post:) I do get mine renewed every 3 years (that's when it should be) but like Pollyanna has said, granted, in more depth than me, you could commit an offence the day after and no-one would know by looking at your CRB until at least 3 years later! Mine is Enhanced to.

I suppose like most western countries now paranoid as hell about employing the next child molester, businesses/schools etc here are open to litigation if they fail due care and to do due diligence on employees.

As a new immigrant you're unlikely to be accepted for a placement if they can't be sure of or access your history in another domain.

I would say you enhance your chances greatly with any info, documents, references, referees, clearances you can bring to the table.

Good luck

Might interest people to know that at a recent interview when they asked me to do a Blue Card (equivalent of CRB check) I pointed out that I only had four years in Aus but could supply a UK one. This was met with "no, no, not necessary, too difficult" That's even when I had one with me that covers all the time I have spent int he UK.
I would suggest that if you can take a copy of a CRB one with you, then do, but don't be surprised if they don't want it.
One job I went for when I first got here accepted a copy of my subject access check though, when I said it was done recently for Immigration purposes. :)

Re: CRB check

Thanks for all the replies you sent me, as there are mixed opinions I will get mine renewed and bring it with me.
While we are on the subject of documentation will a UK first aid certificate be enough for an OZ employer or will they expect me to do a first aid course there.
I'm panicking about going for interviews when I arrive, because even though I been qualified as a nursery nurse for 3½ years I haven't been for any interviews as I decided to do childminding. As anyone got any tips, I have emailed a few settings with my CV and they have told me to contact them again when i arrive in OZ. So fingers crossed.

Thanks again
carol

Not sure if this helps....

I am a school teacher and am currently trying to get sponsored by victoria on an stni visa. As part of this process I had to apply for approval to teach with the victorian teaching authority. To cut a long story short, I had to send heaps of documentation, one of which was a police check.

As I was waiting for this (takes 40 days) sent my application off anyway and enclosed my current CRB check and they have accepted this.

I think perhaps you should contact the authorities concerned. To be on the safe side I would apply for a police check anyway as it only costs 10 quid.

Most industry tickets including first aid have a 2 -3 year lifespan before you have to get them updated. Bring your UK first aid cert with you and I doubt that you will have any problems provided it was issued less than 2 years ago. I hate to think how many times I've done the first aiders ticket over the last 20 years.

There's a chronic shortage of child care services in OZ and plenty of scope to work for yourself especially in the child nanny area. I doubt you'll have too much difficulty finding a job.
