Crazy Brisbane rental market
Hi,
My family (myself, my wife and 1 child) are moving to Brisbane early April. As I start a new job within the CBD late April.
We've had a major problem trying to find rental 2-3 bed funished places within Brisbane for 6 months. The rental market is crazy.
After two weeks of trying for residential letting the majority of agents when you actually phone up say you can't book from the UK as you need to have seen the property on a "viewing day" or a friend on your behalf. Also a lot properties on realestate.com.au the rental detail are always out of date and they never keep it up to date.
So then we've tried holiday letting. There are so many of them, but still no joy at the moment. When you phone the agents up they say "ok we've got somewhere for you, but I will need to speak to the current tennant to see what their plans are and I will let you know"
But most of them never phone you back, or email you.
Here are the websites we've tried:
realestate.com.au
seqrents.com.au
Conias Real Estate
auspitality.com.au
Is there anywhere we could get a 6 month rental for a maximum of $600 per wk within 10km of
Brisbane out there!! lol??
Regards,
Alistair

It's extremely hard to rent anywhere in Australia from overseas. You really do need to do it in person. I'd suggest booking some holiday villa accomodation for maybe 4 weeks to give you time to get somewhere. The system for renting is very different to the UK - there are many many tenants chasing the same properties (although not so much for furnished places) and the agent and/or LL will want to talk to you and see your references (I needed 3 character references as had just arrived from UK). They will also want proof of income so bring your contract. Good luck!

We moved out in September 2007 and had several options for furnished rented accommodation in the CBD and fringes. The market has changed considerably now. For the first time ever there are 6 apartments in our block to rent and the other buildings near us have signs outside advertising vacancies. 3 bed flats are now going for 2 bed flat prices.
Companies are laying off people and sending expats back home so there is going to be more and more property coming on the market and at a reduced rate - so a good time for you to come over.
PS I never went to any of the "open home" viewings.

Yes...I think the rental prices in these areas have been based on expat salaries and rental deals which is why they have been so high. The young guys working with Mr Tooterelli are all getting 700 per week for renting here (they've been sent over from Perth WA) so that's been the going rate for 2 bed flats. Now these guys are being sent home as the work is drying up - so there are lots of vacancies - and the 3 bed flats now are 700 per week!
There is real room for negotiation now and things are hopefully slowly turning in the renters' favour.

We have a few furnished homes but are booked until july unless you want to travel 40mins from cbd short stay only. If you contact DONOVAN via pm on this site she may be able to help you get a 6mth rental before you arrive.

You could try Brisbane Bound, but we booked with them in November so suspect they may have filled their houses. Especially as Easter is in the first couple of weeks of April.
We are going to be in Brisbane in late April too with our 4 year old girl and 8 month old boy. There are quite a few of us moving (there's a thread on here somewhere).
Good luck!
