Is there an Australian equivalent to council tax? If so, how does it work?

In WA we pay rates, no idea how they work them out but ours are around $1300 a year I think, we pay in fortnightly instalments spread over the year.

Council Rates are payable by the property owner, based on the land value.

Some Councils add the water charge to the rates bill, so the rates can seem higher than in some areas, but may not be, if the other areas also get a separate water bill.

We pay our quarterly.

we pay rates of approx $650 a quarter, so twice as much as the above poster. But typical rates around Brisbane are $400 to $550 per quarter.
