in my opinion it is worth it for the toiletries alone and you dont necessarily need to buy in bulk (ie: crate worth)

12 bars of dove soap $14 - woolworths = $6.20 for 2
12 rolls of viva double ply hand towel = $13 - woolworths = $4 for 2
5.5 litres of tide laundry detergent (dont sell locally but still...) = $24 - woolworths = 3.3litres of Omo = $32
30 rolls of kleenex cottonel loo paper = $14 - woolworths = $13 for 18

dont get me started on the salmon, seafood, chicken/ beef, pork etc... quality shits on coles/woolies and again major savings.

i'd genuinely save $150-200 per shop at costco compared to the local guys and we're only a husband and wife-no kids.

Cool. Someone paying attention. Amongst other things, I get toilet rolls, kitchen towels, a load of Bundaberg Ginger Beer, razors and shaving needs for a year, front loader detergent, tooth cleaning stuff, nappies, tissues, a few articles of clothing for the boy..then I might stock up on some cheesecakes...and a crate of lollies for the office...

+2, just me and the wife but we always buy these type of things that last ages. Tend to avoid fresh food because we just can't eat it quick enough before it goes off but for non-perishable items it's brilliant.

I just hope that the prices will be like USA/UK Costcos.

The only problem we have is with the toilet rolls. We hide rolls all over the house!

Things like dishwasher tablets not an issue.

I'm currently putting up some new shelves in our laundry cupboard for all the toilet rolls and stuff!

Tee hee. OK that's it - I've blown my supermarket quota for the year....

I won't mention such trivial stuff until 2012...

Maybe a different thread but my "putting up shelves in the laundry cupboard" didn't get off to the best of starts!

Yep. We had a huge chest freezer in our basement in Canada. Never thought I would need one here, but with Costco opening this month it might be our first major purchase. I still recall pulling stuff out of the freezer that had been there for months - doesn't quite taste the same as eating fresh so maybe we won't go down the freezer route. Maybe we should just start eating more.

You could try these places in the meantime while your waiting for Costco:
- http://www.campbells.com.au/ (need an ABN)

Timely thread...we have moved from USA and Costco opening is very timely. Is the Sydney store already open or opening soon? Any idea if they are offering a "Day Pass" to check out before committing to $60?

On costco membership - definately worth it, saved over £100 on a dyson vacuum compared to currys in uk. Membership then was only £20+vat.
We must have saved a fortune over the years on washing powder, nappies, toilet roll etc. Family of 5 so we get thru alot
Only problem is storage of bulk stuff.
Hoping WA gets one soon.

From the Costco site -"A free Household card is available to a Primary cardholder’s spouse, domestic partner, or immediate family member over the age of 18 and living at the same residential address. Household cardholders will be asked to present proof that they live at the same address as the Primary cardholder."

We were never asked. Mind you, it has been about 7 years since we had a Costco membership.

When we picked up our cards from the Sydney office we were asked to provide photo id, and they checked the address on our driving licences.
