Default Cost of Specialist Doctor Cosultation

Have been referred to a urologist by the GP
wondering that how much will it cost to see a urologist privately?
how much they usually charge per consultation?

just looking for a ballpark figure

Couple of hundred? Very ballpark. You may get some back on Medicare.

Probably anywhere from about $150 to $300 depending on why you're seeing him/her and what tests are done on that day. If it's just a consultation I would say lower end of the scale but if he/she needs to do any tests you can add the cost of those.

If they bill to the AMA schedule of fees (which they don't have to), then the initial consultation will be $240 and subsequent consultations will be $120.

So there's some ball park figures for you...

If you ring them up they'll tell you exactly how much it'll be.

I'd go with anywhere between $150 and $300, that seems to be ball park for any specialists I have seen (for the initial consultation, marginally cheaper for subsequent appointments)

Phone them and get their fees and then item numbers so you can see what rebate you'll get from medicare. Also check with your health fund if you have one. Initial consultations are more expensive than follow ups- budget at least $200.

Not sure about fees for a urologist consultation but I've been seeing a Gyneocolgist privately and he charges a flat rate of $85 per consultation (including the intial one) - get quite a bit back on medicare as well.

Mine are usually about $150 for an initial. My rheumy is $135 each time, my gastro is $85 each time, my Orthopaedic guy is $100 each time. I get a fair amount back each time.

We have now hit our safety net figure due to a heavy year for specialists unfortunately.

So for my $140 initial Orthopaedic visit I paid $13.60 out of pocket the other day. Thank the lord because it was starting to add up.........

The worst sting is for MRI scans as there's no Medicare rebate for those.

Depends. Two of us have had MRIs and not had to pay a cent.

I think if you're on a health card or veterans you may get help but there are posters up all around our Lake Imaging centre warning about the costs of one. I paid $250 for mine. How did you manage it?

However, was bulk billed for Xrays and a CT scan yesterday so that was nice.

I remember now. If you see a specialist on the list of approved MRI referalists (new word!) you can get some Medicare help, but not if sent by a physio, sports physician etc. However, the gap for the specialist may equate to the help you'd get so sometimes there's no real benefit. Plus the wait for the specialist....

Neither of those. I remember saying to the consultants that they couldn't do the MRI as we couldn't afford it, he disappeared for a few minutes, came back and said it would be on Medicare. I didn't argue. The husband's not had to pay for his CT and PET scans either which is good. First Born had to have an EEG as well, that was also 'free'. Medicare have been very good to us, or the Consultants have.

My private specialist charges me $120 (approx) for my appointments, I get most back on Medicare. When he orders Xrays/bloods etc he does it on Medicare so I dont pay anything and if I need injections I get seen in the public system.

My eye specialist - it depends what he does, usually around $150 unless I am having eye procedures done but still get back a good chunk on Medicare. Very pleased with the care really, sometimes it is hard when you have to find the money from somewhere and you have medicines that you have to take and its non negotiable to not purchase them but we have learned to plan around that.

We have private insurance but will save that if we needed an operation I guess.
