cost of shipping motorhome to oz
i am enquiring how much it would cost to ship a 4 berth coachbuilt motorhome to perth from uk
or is it worth it and instead sell it in the uk before we leave and buy a new motorhome in australia
what is the market like for motorhomes in perth if we decided to buy one there, anyone have any websites of dealers in perth
thanks

Look at www.movingdownunder.co.uk/files/motoring.php
It will cost loads to ship it with the taxes etc. Plus Oz is not short of motorhomes.

Re: cost of shipping motorhome to oz
We shipped our motorhome here a year ago. It cost about 3000UK and 400 in insurance. We looked at all the options, as you have.
Selling in the UK meant we wouldn;t have made enough money to buy a decent one here. As we were coming on a 457 we used a "Carnet", which you can get from the RAC (now- though used to be the AA). This allows you to bring it in temporarily for a year. At the time both UK and AUS customs advised that it could be extended up to 3 years so that gave us time to decide what we were doing.
We now have permanent residence (decision taken), and Customs have also changed the rules and a carnet can only be extended 3 months!!!!
Still the value of the camper in the UK was 18000, as valued on landing here was AUS 62500. There was no way we could have bought an equivalent one here. We have also attended a number of camper/caravan shows and they are considerably more expensive here. Unless you are willing to downgrade to a caravan.
Import duty and GST do add up though. Make sure you have all the doco. If you bought before March 1998 - seems much less duty and GST. After that it seems to double, but just figuring out those figures accurately now. Also - it will need to be a RHD and some other bits and pieces to get it registered here.
The customs website is a good place to start. I think its www.customs.gov.au
We wouldn't have done it differently despite the costs!! We've had many weeks and weekends away at low cost and there is much more of the state and country still waiting for us

Re: cost of shipping motorhome to oz
Should have also added that our motorhome was too big to go in a container even an extra big one so we arranged to ship it with a company who ship new cars around. This took some finding and we arranegd it direct with them.
It was a huge roll on roll off ship - about 9 storeys high!!
Most of the shipping companies will not allow any personal possessions under these circumstances. (if it fits in a container, you can put lots of possessions in there as well) , and they also charge a fortune - up to 5000 some quotes.
The one we went with had a more relaxed view. The official view point was the same - no personal possessions at all. But the chap I dealt with said as long as they weren't obviously visible and we were willing to take the risk (no insurance cover) than give it a go.
We boxed out the overcab bed and made the rear dining area up into a raised bed which gave us room to pack not only all our bikes and compuer equipment but absolutely tonnes of our belongings. We disguised both areas to look as if they normally looked like that. This saved us thousands in other shipping costs!
Yep - its wasn't insured but then the goods we shipped seperately we paid insurance for but when it turned up broken - guess what - they wouldn't pay out anyway!!!
At this end we declared everything to customs and we had a full list of all the contents so there was no issues getting it released.
Hope this helps
