LOL, it's not free, we pay for it in our tax!

This thread is really useful - especially the summary that compares NHS with Medicare for each type of health care. Very clear and concise (wonderful for when you come home knackered from work and think "oh no, I need to research xyz", and then find something like this - thanks!! x) :)

It would be nice if the Op actually came back and told us what they meant, instead of just starting a thread and then walking away from it.

And the Inner West. I work within spitting distance of 3 bulk billing GPs in Balmain, and usually go to one in Newtown if I need to.

There are bulk billing surgeries at 396, 407 and 428 Darling Street.

I believe that The Balmain Medical Practice in the complex at 2 Beattie Street also bulk bills.

What part of Sydney ? I lived there for 12 years, and only ever used Bulk Billers, never once had to pay.

Not like QLD, I had to pay once in 2003, and then got all but $5 back !!

People who live in the richer suburbs will however, rarely find any doctor that will subsidise the patients.

In Sydney I never had a problem finding a bulk billing Dr, I used to use the Medical Centre on George Street in the city centre (in the HSBC building), also once used one out in Rhodes and also Arncliffe.

In Canberra, now that’s a different story... I cannot find a bulk billing Dr.

I think the rates of GP services bulk billed are close to 80% for Sydney but near 50% for Canberra....small cities and rural area's are the worst.

Hope you dont mind me picking your brains but you seem to have the knowledge of everything Australia!!!!
We are moving over in April to Queensland nor sure which area as yet. My 7 year old son needs to wear glasses indefinately and needs regular check ups for a small cataract he has on one eye. He is under the care of our local hospital at the moment but hopefuly they will discharge him and we can get eye test at out local optician.
W.ill medicare cover any of this or we will need to take out private medical insuranace and much will they help towards costs?
Any help on this would be great.

Not sure if you are talking to me but I'm sure someone one the forum will have been though this situation and know the exact way it is handled. Medicare is a public system just like the NHS for whenever you have an illness. So I'm fairly sure eye issues are treated just like any illness same as NHS. Hopefully someone will come along and tell us 100%. I imagine the decision to go private or not might come down to whether there is a long or short wait for a public specialist in the area you choose. Good luck.
