it doesnt say in the survey whether the cost of living is relative to the local salary. If it was in relation to local salary, why is the strenght of the currency on the world market a factor? It's all interesting stuff but I'm just curious as to why currency markets come into it...can anyone explain. Is it to do with local prices being impacted by currency movements?

Actually the survey ranked cost of living for foreign workers, not local residents.
The survey, which is used primarily by multinational companies to determine pay for expatriate employees, took into consideration 250 criteria, including the cost of utilities, food and entertainment.
While the survey looked at a range of living standards, Ms Sepede said the study was most representative of the expenses of people working for big international corporations and maintaining fairly high standards of living.
