Re: Cost of living in queensland
It's pretty crappy.
If you use MSN messenger or the like you'll notice it may drop off a few times per night. Your download speed and quota will also be much lower.
If you dont really care about it being a bit more unstable / slow than a land line and have a laptop and possibly would use the net from other places other than home, then it's OK.
In terms of providers maybe Virgin mobile.. or check whirlpool and see what people say. http://www.virginmobile.com.au/broad...ile-broadband/

Should be read as..."so what do you and your kids eat (if you spend that much on the animals..lol!!) It is actually quite good, though. A family of 4 in the UK could be the same but in £ not $, goes to show.

Re: Cost of living in queensland
Looking at the above figures am i correct in thinking that with all rent, food, utility bills, health care, motoring, internet/phone, etc, etc. you're going to have to be bringing in at least $4500 a month./£2600. Annually you're looking at a salary in the region of $54.000-$60.000/£35K just to break even.

Re: Cost of living in queensland
From what I have heard, if you are a couple, one goes to work to pay the cost of living, the other works (part-time?) to pay the rent/mortgage. It is managable if you are sensible, but generally cost of living is high in Oz.

Catholic private school: $5,000 - $10,000 per year tuition
Protestant or non-denominational private school: $8,000 - $17,000 per year tuition.
Sundry expenses are roughly the same as at state schools, though there are optional clubs/activities that can be quite expensive (e.g. horse dressage).

Re: Cost of living in queensland
Weve been back in oz 6 weeks after UK, so obviously fridge was a bit empty to begin with. But for 2 teens, 1 builder, and me weve been spending $300+ a week every week since weve been back.
We do not eat junk, thats the problem I think, its all lean meat, fish, $60 of fruit and veg a week, grain breads, milk etc. If we ate crap it could be a lot cheaper.
That would include the cleaning/bathroom products, I just chuck in one or two a week, usually the cheap green enviro brand.
$230 for 5 sounds V cheap, even if the kids are yet to hit teenage appetites.

Re: Cost of living in queensland
There's 3 of us and a dog and our grocery bill probably comes to about $1000 a month ... that includes the occasional non-grocery item though.
We also do about the same in alcohol (joke ... ish) ... it's Sodom and Gomorrah combined at our gaff!

Re: Cost of living in queensland
My memory of UK prices is some 7 years old and exchange rates have swung a lot since then so I have less idea on what is cheap or expensive here these days.
To add to the list:
Case (carton, call it what you will) of 24 Corona - $50
Case 24 Stella - ~$68
Case low alcohol beers (Hahn Premium Light, etc) - $30
Spirits (roughly)
Good name 750ml spirits (think Stoli, Absolut, Barcardi etc) around $40-50
Wine
depends o nwhat you think drinkable really. I would avoid most wine under $15. From $15-20 for wine for a BBQ. $20-25 for nice stuff you'd drink yourself.
