I realise that the weather in Canberra may be a bit cooler than other places, but it would still be nice to have a pool for when it does get warm. If we can find a house that we like with one in place that will be great, if not we will wait a year, sample the climate and make our decision then.

This may sound stoopid...but

The mettle railings around pools in backyards - what's that for, do you have to have some sort of barrier up for health and safey regs?

or is it to keep the crocs out?

Health and safety, its a legal requirement to have them.

If you didn't have them, and someone (who you hadn't invited) was on your property, fell in and drowned, you'd be up for manslaughter - worse case scenario of course

There are "legal" ways around this.
If there is no way for the uninvited guest (actually stary kids are the culprits you are supposed to keep out) to easily get into your premises and/or no easy way for kids to run out of your house and into the pool (ie, mixture of good gates/fencing/self-closing doors with high locks that do not have to be around the pool as such), then you may not need an ugly fence around the pool as such.
Regulations can be found on the council web sites

Andrew

You got me curious, so I had a look. Seems to depend on whether your pool is pre or post 1991. If its pre, then what you say is correct, otherwise it seems to require a full fence.

"Fencing standards
The following rules apply if you are building a new fence:

the fence must be built to today's standards
the fence will need building approval
a temporary fence must be erected during construction
The type of pool fence you require depends on the date the pool was built.

pools built pre-1991: access from the dwelling to the pool area is allowed through doors that are self-closing and self-latching
pools built post-1991: pools require an isolation fence that fully encloses the pool "

Taken from Brisbane Council Regs

Here is a pic of the glass fencing we put in. IMO it's much more pleasing on the eye!

Though it does cost a lot more to do than normal metal fencing; so if people are happy with just getting a fence to comply with regulations then it might not be worth spending the extra cash.

Hi Owieb...nice pool area...

we looked at having the 'glass' fencing but it struck me that it might be a bugger to keep clean....what do you reckon???

Also, is that an 'above ground pool' you have???

Best wishes, x

This is what we went for in the end as we are very limited on space. Due to building regulations (in Perth) the pool has to be the same distance from any boundaries as it is deep.

By getting an above ground pool we could get away with a much bigger pool by having a bit of it sticking out of the ground.

We were quoted around $12K for a smaller concrete pool. The above ground one worked out at about $4K including pump, filter etc.

Gave us spare cash to put in a nice glass panel fence rather than metal bars!

Hi there,

I know I'm a complete novice to swimming pools but will an above ground pool really be ok put in a dug out hole??? Will it last as long as a proper in-ground pool???

If so then thats a fab idea and loads cheaper!!!

And how do you disguise the bit sticking out coz I would imagine it woun't look very nice??

Anyone got any piccies of an above ground pool that's been dropped in a dug out hole so I can see how it looks???????

Cheers

Yes it is a buggar to keep clean!

I've yet to find anything that makes it easy to get the water marks off. Thought some of the shower cleaners would work, but they don't seem to shift it. Keep meaning to get in touch with the suppliers and ask them for some advice.

Yes it is an above ground pool.

Yeah it's fine to drop them into the ground, they should last about 20 years, the liner will last about 10 years. But to replace the liner the top of the pool just comes off; so it's really easy to change.

You don't have to have any bit sticking out, it can be flush with the ground. We had to have a bit sticking out because we wanted to be closer to the boundaries. Our pool is 1.3m deep, but we only sunk 800mm into the ground so could go 0.8m away from the boundaries which allowed us to get a bigger pool in.

There are some pics on this website of what the pools can look like.
