Default Copyright law to be reviewed

This is the land where you cannot backup your CDs and copying music to the ipod is illegal. Hopefully some sensible laws will come into place.

iPods prompt copyright rethink
Paul Osborne
MAY 06, 2005 THE rise of the iPod and digital video technology has forced the federal government to rethink copyright laws.

Under current laws it is illegal to copy a CD onto a digital music recorder such as an iPod or to videotape a television program. But millions of Australians breach these sections of the copyright laws as a matter of course every day.

There are exclusions from copyright for research or study, criticism or review, reporting news and professional advice.

it does seem that Australian law is very draconian and ill thought out. I hope that over time with the influx of more forward thinking poms we will see more of a liberalisation.

Australian Copyright Council: Music: copying MP3s, CDs and audio-cassettes: April 2004

UK: Portable media players have created more pirates than Penzance

Little difference.

You're clearly an expert on Australian law - can you explain how a handful of english migrants each year are going to have such a liberalising effect on our lawmakers?

Can't say I've noticed that many forward-thinking ones on this forum - majority seem to be moving to the furthest outskirts of Perth - which is not exactly at the forefront of anything.....
