Contributory parent vs. temp Contributory parent visas

Quick question for those in the know....

I know the application for the contributory parent visa (subclass 143) takes from 12 - 18 months to process.

Does the Temporary contributory parent visa (subclass 173) take as long - or is it faster?

Cheers!

The 173 is usually a few weeks quicker as it doesn't require an Assurance of Support.

However, the 173 to 143 strategy involves having an Assurer in place in two years time, and introduces the risk that your planned Assurer's circumstances might change such that s/he cannot then act for you. In that very undesirable situation you may find you cannot obtain the grant of a permanent 143 visa and are facing the prospect of having to depart Australia.

As such if you have an Assurer in place now I'd be looking at a 143 application, even if it takes a few weeks longer to be granted.

Best regards.

Just reading through the threads on parent visas, and found this thread very informative.

Apart from the issue of assurance of support are there any other differences between the two visas?

My brother is already an Australian Citizen, we have our PR visa and are now looking into the best options for my parents.

Grateful for any advice, Claire

The main difference is that one visa is temporary, the other is permanent. That's a huge difference.
