This is the order we did things.
We arrived on a Friday and stayed in a holiday park, we booked two weeks to begin with and started looking for houses on day 4 (Tuesday). We went round and looked at 5 houses altogether, but only liked two of them, both of which we filled out applications for. By Tuesday of the second week we had been succesfully picked for the second one we looked at. We accepted the tenancy and moved in on Friday, just as the holiday house rental was up - PHEW!!. All we provided to the agent was a bank statement and a personal reference that we had e-mailled to them.
We enrolled the kids in the local schools on the Wednesday of the third week of being here, this was really easy and the kids started school shortly afterwards. Youngest started on the Frida and the eldest started on the following Monday.
Now the OH has started looking for work, although the OH needs to apply for his Electrical licence he has had one interview and a medical so far and we are waiting to hear how that went. He has applied for two jobs, one was an agency and the other wasn't. Suprisingly the agancy hasn't been in touch
Because we have funds that can last us for two years if we don't find work the priority wasn't on getting a job. We have been really lucky in settling quickly so now hubby can get out to work (although he's not rushing ) It would obviously depends on how much cash you have as to how quick you need to work but I'd say getting a house should be your major concern as staying in temporary accomodation eats into your cash.
Hope that helps a bit

a lot will depend on the ages of your children and the type of schooling you are looking at. If you have high school aged kids then you need to think about which high school you want them to be in and then have to look for accommodation within the catchment zone, similarly if you have children who will be either kindy or pre primary you may finf that you can't get them in your local school as places fill fast and are not compulsory so this may not be convenient either. If you want to put your children to private school then you will have to check that there are vacancies for your children.
If you are puting your children to a public school then the school has to take them if you live in the catchment zone.
My advice would be to do plenty of research and find areas which suit what you want from a lifestyle point of view, then when you arrive here take the time to visit all the areas you have picked out and spend plenty of time in them, once you have made your decision find a house, once you have an address within the catchment zone the school will accept your application.
One thing to remember, once you have settled your children in school the chances are you wont want to move them again so also look into whether or not you will be able to buy a property in the suburb you are renting or a neighbouring one so you can avoid long school runs when you eventually buy your own home.

Not really. But after years of having not a lot we have learnt how to be careful with what we have got.
