I have always considered Toshiba to be "much" better than Dell

ABCDiamond,
I agree with that assumption!

We have Dell's at work and thay are for ever having new keyboards. Thay are also a little bit flimsey- lacking the strength in the case that you need in a laptop.

This could just be mine, but they all seam the same.
Then again these are the cheep models.

Myself I wenr for a Tosh Satalite P10-722 with wide screen and a DVD - burner. I use a seperate netgear wireless card in the PCMCIA slot, but you can get internal ones. Cost £900 but prices are allways comming down.

I'll need to buy a laptop in the UK before I go as I'm moving shortly and my daughter's getting my desktop. Can't manage for nearly 3 months without my internet and expats fix!

I was seriously thinking of getting a Dell Inspiron 510m as it's fairly light and seems to have an pretty good spec for my (fairly simple) needs. Current online price £1,147 inc VAT.

Dell laptops have been recommended by Which magazine in the past too. However I haven't been able to confirm from the website whether they carry worldwide warranty.

Performance and weight-wise, Fujitsu Lifebook series S would be my second choice (again, Which reports are my source).

Can anyone advise whether I can get worldwide warranty on either Dell or Fujitsu laptops, or would you recommend Compaq or Toshiba as being just as good anyway?

we both have 3 year old Dell Inspiron laptops with 3year international warrenties. We have been out here for 2 years and have had no problems with the calls for warranty work, of which we have had quite a few niggly little things, basically because our laptops tend to get chucked around a lot and abused!!

we haven't had to upgrade or anything as we paid a fair bit for them in the first place so expect them to be 'cutting edge' and to be good enough for a few years yet!!

just beware that you get what you pay for.

Thanks Mandy,

I'm anticipating that my laptop will be reasonably static here but as I may end up working part time for myself in Aus I'll probably be carrying it around quite a bit.

It's useful to know you've had no problems with the warranty side of things.

I'm going for the lighter Inspiron (510m) and the price I've been quoted includes MS Office 2003 Small Business as I don't have a recent edition of Office (still on 97!) Maybe I could get the software cheaper elsewhere though as it adds over £200 to the price...

It's not the cheapest in the range, but a lot less than the heavier models and I'm fairly happy that the spec will be enough for me - I don't play games on the PC and haven't used graphics; it's basic word processing and spreadsheet work plus internet access that I need.

Sounds like I should be ok with my original choice but should look at Toshiba to check for an equivalent model?

Thanks to all,

Elaine M

I recently bought an HP laptop from Vizik.com for £500 less than I would have paid for the equivalent machine here in the UK. They specialise in shipping from the US to the UK and buy all their stuff direct from the manufacturer.

Still on Office 97 You do realise when you buy the laptop, it doesn't come with office installed, and if they are going to put that on it for you, make sure you demand a copy.

Yes you get the software for a lot cheaper elsewhere, amybe even for nothing, if you know the right people. Heard of OFFICE 2003? Its the "canine's testicles", better than all the previous ones, with new features in outlook, and the lovely VISIO for those presentation diagrams.

I've had Dell's, Toshiba's, HP's, Twinheads and a host of other laptops over the years.

Best value for money: Toshiba. They are built to last.

Example. During a visit to Singapore in 1996, I had a Tecra laptop which I travelled everywhere with. Within a 3 week period, I spilt two pints of beer on the machine and also dropped it down a flight of 8 steps (it fell out of the bag when I got to the top). I still have the laptop, and apart from the big crack on the side and the smell of Asahi, it's in perfect working order.

I have a Dell Latitude as a main working laptop, and it weighs a ton and overheats quite a lot. The screen is quite big, but in hindsight, I would have chosen a lighter laptop.

I now have visions of you trying to drink two pints while using the laptop. How many arms do you have?! I'm not surprised you split them!

Elaine,

Have a look at this forum - http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=2

You will find loads of info on laptops, the ones from rockdirect get good reviews, and for the spec are good value, compared to what you can get in Aus.

At the end of the day, buying a laptop is all about what you want to do with it, designing, architecturing, IT, et al. Don't let them sell you things you are never going to use, you've got to remember that only a few things can be upgraded on a laptop, its not like a desktop.

You can buy the cheapest one to start with, and if you need other stuffs like a zip drive, just buy a USB 2.0 iomega pocket size one for next to nothing.
