Default comparison between Uk and Australian education (primary/secondary)

My family is moving to Australia in about 2 years (probably Melbourne). Our kids are 2 and 5. The 5 year old is at a catholic state school, although we are not religious. If we can afford it, we might consider private education when we arrive.
What are the respective systems, (state and private) like, how do they compare and what are the rough per annum costs?

Thanks for any advice.
